Often the wiring looms and ancillaries for accessories are fitted at the factory as its cheaper for BMW in the long run. Makes the cruise retrofit relatively easy ;-)

US market manuals had a clutch switch fitted to stop drivers starting the car in gear. The clutch pedal had to be depressed before the starter would operate.

Also there is this mod which may only apply to US market cars.

UK cars do not have the clutch/starter interlock switch.

On our cars the clutch switch is in the ECU system, and tells the ignition timing circuit that you are changing gear, so allowing a more rapid fall in rpm.

Mine gave trouble while still in BMW warranty, the rpm rising by up to 1500 rpm during a gear change.

Didn't realise it affected the revs when changing, not something I've noticed on my car. I can't detect what it does but obviously it's definitely there to cancel the cruise.

A popular modification in America is to hot wire the clutch switch to permit faster throttle response all the time, which I keep planning to try out, as the Z3 always feels like it has too much flywheel effect. Maybe I'll get round to it this summer.

I think the cruise control cutout is a seperate switch.
