Slight engine rattle

Post by Pistol968 »

I get a slight engine rattle when switching off after a run. Is this normal? its on a 2.8 Pre facelift.

It's not normal, but could be something as simple as a worn viscous fan coupling - check it for play, or remove it and see what happens.

If you have air con, also check the compressor clutch for play.

Are you sure the rattle is not present all the time the engine is running?

Thanks Mike, I will check but pretty sure engine runs as sweet as a nut with no oil loss etc and temps all fine. It just happens when I switch it off and its "closes down" literally for one second after the key is turned off.

I'll get exact name for the part making the noise for you on Friday, my Indy said its the lay shaft?, well I think that's what he said :) Either way, nothing to worry about, apparently common issue on these he's seen loads, and I've heard a few M's with same noise on YouTube vid too :)

Will write down the exact name of issue when I'm at Indy Friday for new brakes

could be the timing chain tensioners too...its a common problem on m52 engines. Most make the mistake of thinking this rattle is the vanos but most of the time its just the tensioners. Its still a bitch of a job

No problem - the noise when you shut down is the gearbox layshaft bearings having a rattle. They do that when they have some miles on the clock and all you do is depress the clutch as you shut if off. Even if you don't, it won't do any harm.

Thanks good to know its nothing serious! Its only done 53000 miles so I guess these can start to rattle even at relatively low miles.
