Brake pipes - Expected Costs

Post by LookinFoolish »

How much would you expect to pay for two rear brake pipes in a garage? I had an advisory on the MOT as I mentioned a while ago and think it's probably about time to look at it now.

The metal ones? If you are even mildly competent you can make your own. Something like this:

Complete piece of cake to do.

£35 followed by a messy death if you don't know what you are doing.

Fair enough if you are competent and have somewhere to work on the car. I actually thought the dealer price was pretty good and is considerably cheaper than some indies.

Exactly right. Unfortunately I don't have the space or appropriate knowledge to mess around with brake-related parts. If those brakes are going to help prevent an accident, I want to be sure they've been done properly, plus I'd rather not end up killing myself to save a bit of cash. I'll look at my local BMW specialist, I suspect he'll do it cheaper, and I need brake fluid, so with this including brake fluid that's better still :) two birds with 1 stone

I paid £86 for braided hoses all round. They are not tough to do, but I did have the help of an experienced mechanic to be sure  Should be about 1-2 hours labour depending on how hard they are to get off.
Cheers

thanks for the info msassoon. I still haven't took the plunge, but most likely will get it sorted in time for the next MOT.

Hi mate,

Where did you get the braided ones from?

Had an advisory today, may well get the lot replaced Z3M ones.

Anyone know if the whole Zed range (including LHD) are the same?

Cheers

I may be being daft here, but have braided hoses got to do with brake pipes? Certainly on my car, the part that was flagged up as being corroded was the solid brake pipe which runs from the ABS pump to the rear of the car and NOT the flexible hose that runs from where the solid pipe ends to the brake callipers. Replacing the hoses alone is substantially cheaper than replacing an entire brake pipe from the front to the rear of the car. The diagram below hopefully shows what I am on about:

i was quoted £165+vat for both sides which i took to be £45 an hour x 3= £135 + £30 for pipes & brake fluid. This was from a well respected BMW Indie who is a little low on work while people spend their money on hols.I thought it was very fair & reasonable.
