Having had to remove the large plastic guard underneath my 1998 1.9 to replace the gearbox exhaust bracket, I thought I would take the opportunity to do a bit of “under-car” maintenance. Just managed to make out a faded yellow gearbox sticker and so decided to drain/refill with Castrol Syntrans MTF 75w-90 (GL4), also intend to bleed the clutch and change with fuel filter. Before doing the latter I thought I’d do a thorough job and also replace the 2 inch length of fuel pipe either side of the filter plus the four hose clips. However, when checking the correct type of fuel hose to use I’m getting some confusing/conflicting info. It seems that the modern-day fuel hose recommendation/rating for high pressure injection systems is SAE J30R9 whereas when my BMW was built SAE J30R6 was typically used and is still widely held in car accessory shops. Apparently the former is tougher with a much higher bursting pressure. Is it best to use SAE J30R9 these days, anybody knowledgeable expert out there?
