Went to the local H/ware shop...found this....
Image

The instructions say use a brush and paint it on...leave for 10 minutes and hose off....I'm a sceptic...but,
From this.....

To this...in 10 minutes...

I used a kitchen scourer, so you can see where I had difficulty accessing between pipes etc...But nonetheless...a pretty good result. ..and it removed the grease / oil / grit deposits with ease.

From what I hear from Captain / Hilton, there may be one of the pipes that needs an alteration to accomodate the Z3 steering. I'll do a post when I've had the job done.

BMW Softtop cleaner, impregnating agent, glass cleaner and 5 litres of screenwash concentrate. Dealer was having a bit of a sale and I wanted to say thank you for letting me take out a new Z4 - we were supposed to be looking at new 1-series for my Dad - it was the same chap that sold me my Z3, so the poor bloke must be hoping I will buy a new car soon! :D

 Prelim fitting of M3 Exhaust manifolds scheduled for monday...once that's been sorted, they'll go for ceramic coating, and then final fitting.
However, for those who want the easy way out / plug&play...here's an item from Turner Motorsport which is designed to replace the OEM manifolds on the Z3 6cyl cars....

They list them at around $750.00 a set

Can anyone explain how the flow can be better with all those bends... compare to the original one???

It's in the length of the individual outlets...before the gasses get to the point where they can backtrack up towards another cylinder causing a "stifiling" effect. In this way, the gasses are aiding each other to escape down towards the rear and out.
When the gas escapes from each cylinder, it's extremely hot and expands rapidly from the cylinderhead into the exhaust manifold...this expansion results in further heating..and also pressure. This pressure must go somewhere, and usually along the path of least resistance, which is up the next section of exhaust manifold as well as out towards the rear. The expansion into the next section of the manifold creates a resistance to the gasses that are to be expelled there by that cylinder, and so on etc etc. through the 3 cylinders on each manifold. The longer individual pipes allows the gas to expand there, and is forced to go to the main outlet, by which time the following cylinders are already fired, exhausted and also on their way out. The overall benefit is less back pressure to each cylinder.

What a brilliant reply, but I may have to read it a few more times before it 'clicks'...

...yeah, unfortunately it was written at 2am in the morning my time...I had a disturbance during the night here at home. Turned out to be some moron types trying to scale the wall into my property...thankfully we are entitled to own firearms in SA...so a few pops in their direction and they scapered with my security guys in pursuit. The joys of living in Africa...never a dull moment.Image

To get back to manifolds....it's the length of the individual outlets before they merge with the others which is important. It allows the gasses to assist rather than resist each other. Also, bends aren't an issue...it's a gas, not liquid, so not really relevant. The Z3 M cars, and the M3's all have these type exhaust manifolds for a reason. It doesn't increase horsepower, but does improve the responsiveness of those horses through better removal of the exhaust waste. As you know, there is "torque" and "horsepower"...torque is what gives you acceleration, HP is what gives you top end. If you can improve the efficiency of the motor, the result is improved torque / fuel economics and a bigger grin on your chops...you're not going to go any faster top end...but you'll get there a little quicker....in every gear. At the moment with my OEM manifold, but with other mods, I can achieve just under 7000rpm in all gears except 5th...at which point I chicken out...I want to improve torque performance and economy. I've fitted the M50 big bore intake manifold, I have a full twin exhaust system from the OEM manifolds to the rear with 4 tail outlets, and I've had the car chipped and re-mapped...I use 98 octane fuel with iridium spark plugs and a Simota CAI system in front of the intake manifold. Again...CAI's don't increase HP...but they do improve responsiveness...Torque.
Small tweaks that make driving a Z3 a true roadster experience... :D

The bends are significant in that they can cause vortices in the gas flow. The curvier manifold has a much straighter exit from the engine block and much shallower bends which the gases will follow more easily.

This Friday coming a shiny stainless Longlife exhaust from the Taunton fitter, before that, lambda sensors at Westerly BMW. :head: The following week a new radiator.

Now if I could just sort out the sun, I'd be happy. :D

79 Euros!! Makes me weep!

Where in Alicante are you? I'm often out there - my parents live the other side of Elche and we have a place near El Campello too.

I'm about 30 minutes north of Benidorm (where we go to quite a lot, usually about 35euros for a double room and no worries about driving back after a thirsty day!). We are just inland a wee bit from Denia and near Javea. Let me know next time you're out and we can meet up for a cold beer and I'll introduce you to the loudest Z3 in the Costa Blanca!

I think it might be a new battery since it keeps going flat. :( I had the chance of a nice drive this afternoon and it was completely dead, so had to take my boring works 320d instead.

Not sure if the boot light is staying on since neither of the plungers in the lid seem to turn it off, so I've disconnected it to see if it makes any difference. Will have to get my meter out to check for any current draw, but I expect the alarm might take a small amount if anyone knows what this might be?

Lid light control is in the locking mechanism. The plungers are shock absobers for closing the boot.
Put a mobile phone in the boot on video record to see if it goes off...
or climb in, close the boot, and wait......... whilst shouting help a few times....... :D

I have an element of 'M-styling' on my car, If that's a good enough reason for the manufacturers to adorn a 320 with the M badge, then its certainly a good enough reason for me..
