Re: What did you buy your Z3 this week ?
A handbrake shoe fitting kit after one of side became detached and started making a horrible noise inside the drum. At first I thought I'd got a stone stuck between the calliper and the disc, but applying the brakes make no difference to the noise, and there was also a bit of rattling going on. I took it to my friendly ex-BMW guy to fix and he sorted it the same day. Seems that as the back plate corrodes, the hole the spring for the handbrake goes through enlarges and the spring can just pop out - the fix consists of adding a washer behind the backplate. Changing the backplate involves removing the wheel bearings, so the washer is a nice cheap fix!
Spotted a Bright Red Z3 1.9 in the workshop which was a bit poorly - new cylinder head gasket going on - quite unusual for an M44.
Cheers R.

Hi to you all again. Well I have just ordered an indirect item for my Z3. It is a dedicated bespoke 7x3 Pent Roof Shed with the sole intention of storing my Hardtop complete with trolley and cover albeit is longer and slightly wider than needed it will also allow the storage of my spare set of original style wheels and tyres (Thank you again Kevin).
I now have a secure storage for the items during their late Spring,Summer and early Autumn Sabbatical from the car.
This post somehow ended-up in the New Project - 1998 M Roadster. I have done Copy & Paste into here after getting a notification of a new post.
Mod Edit: I will go and delete the other post now. R.

Re: What did you buy your Z3 this week ?
I had my local independent specialist of choice carry out a few bits and pieces on my "to do" list but the one that has transformed the car is a new throttle cable. My old one had a kink in it (just before the throttle linkage) and had stretched so that when the accelerator pedal was flat to the floor there was still some movement before the throttle bodies were fully open.
The difference is amazing! I think that the kink had to straighten before the throttles opened and this had dulled the response a bit. I imagine that the change is similar to that experienced in high end cars with a sport setting that sharpens throttle response.

Re: What did you buy your Z3 this week ?
The emergence of an Estoril blue hard top on Ebay prompted me to search for a fitting kit. Found the brackets on a wrecked 2.8 in a breakers near Ashford complete with only one screen bolt but with the crucial plastic covers for the mounting brackets intact. Then ordered one bolt from main dealer and T40 torx tool from a guy on here.
Fitted brackets on car, won hard top in auction (£455 since you ask) and then drove to Oxford yesterday to fit it and drive home.
Top was in better order than described by vendor so I am a happy bunny. A sticker says it was made in July 1998 and given that my car was made in August of that year it is perfect. It fIts a treat, was quiet on the motorway and didn't leak after being sprayed with the hose. The headlining was covered in dead spiders and bits of web which certainly bears out the vendor's ( a Mini dealer) story that it had been in a storage unit for about four years.

Hi littlefeller. I cannot locate my heated rear screen loom without pulling the car to bits, where would be a good place to start looking and can they be felt through the carpet with pressure applied? What are the two semi circular scorelines in the carpet behind the seats and to the central region of that area?

Re: What did you buy your Z3 this week ?
ummm duno, but mine has a heater rear screen switch, this is located, umm not so easy to explain, i will try - its at the rear of the handbrake, on the trim that goes up at the back, i would imagine any z without it fitted would still have a blanking plate here. i can go through the wiring diagrams and figure out where yours would be if you likeARoosterinaRoadster wrote:littlefeller wrote:a dash cam, for £13 everyone should buy one of these, could save you a furtune. it doesnt have to be exelent video, just enough to show whats going on, or rather what happend i will wire mine into the heated rear screen switch/loom as i no longer need it but its still all there.

Hi littlefeller. I bought my hardtop off of Kevin ( a forum member) after going over to Ipswich and having him fit it for me but gave over looking for the connection because it was getting late and looked like it was about to throw it down and I had a 240 miles + return journey home.littlefeller wrote:ummm duno, but mine has a heater rear screen switch, this is located, umm not so easy to explain, i will try - its at the rear of the handbrake, on the trim that goes up at the back, i would imagine any z without it fitted would still have a blanking plate here. i can go through the wiring diagrams and figure out where yours would be if you likeARoosterinaRoadster wrote:littlefeller wrote:a dash cam, for £13 everyone should buy one of these, could save you a furtune. it doesnt have to be exelent video, just enough to show whats going on, or rather what happend i will wire mine into the heated rear screen switch/loom as i no longer need it but its still all there.

What I am not entirely sure about is just how much pulling to bits is needed to actually locate the connection.

Hi littlefella. OK but why dash cam? Is that because the power feed can be taken from the same point?littlefeller wrote:i will have a butchers, but will start another thread as i dont want to clog this one up, i will name it dash cam

Re: What did you buy your Z3 this week ?
Actually bought them last week, but only got them on this evening, a set of Spax VSX dampers and springs from Larkspeed. Only had a short drive with them fitted so far but seems good, one unexpected bonus is that the metallic-sounding ting-ting noise from somewhere in the back end seems to have gone. The ones that came off looked original to me, twelve and a half years may have been too much for them, the old rear dampers had about two inches of travel before anything happened. Don't know if it's been mentioned before, but if anyone else feels like doing it themselves, it's all quite easy, make sure you've got a very sturdy 18mm socket and a long breaker-bar, the front bolts on mine were fighting all the way out. Must have used some serious Loctite-type stuff at the factory.

the dash cam comes with a cigarete lighter socket plug, but i dont want the wires dangling down, so i will use another 12v feed, the heated rear screen switch is redundant so i will use thatARoosterinaRoadster wrote:Hi littlefella. Hi to you all. I am trying to upload an image but I am getting this ;-- Sorry, the board attachment quota has been reached.
What is it all about and how do I correct the issue or does it mean that I delete all of my saved images and throw away my camera?

You are better saving your photos in something like Photobucket, then just copying the IMG code and pasting it into your post.

Hi TR4man. I was of the understanding that when an image is uploaded from my PC onto this or any other forum that it is published and then forgotten about and does not actually constitute or count towards an "Album" that can then become full.TR4man wrote:You are better saving your photos in something like Photobucket, then just copying the IMG code and pasting it into your post.

The Wiesseman Z3 hardtop that was on sale here and on ebay.
Had a few scuff marks on it so James knocked a few quid off (so got it for £750), very pleased with that.
My Z is a red 2.8, the colour contrast looks great, I thought about having it sprayed red but I reckon it looks pretty good in black (I think it is cosmos but not certain), hope to put a pic on here tomorrow.
Was a bit of a trek from Cheddar to Morecambe on Saturday but much more enjoyable coming back and surprised how quiet the cabin was.
Cheers
