Hard top on yet?

Post by motco »

Must admit that I fitted mine this afternoon. :( But that I have an excuse. I am hoping to be moving house soon and needed to fit it to transport it. The hoist has to come down too and with all the other things to do, it had to be done now.

Not yet, though mine has a slight leak that I need to sort otherwise by spring I'll have a mouldy interior. :( Still get the odd nice afternoon if I get home from work early I can go out for a roof down blast, with the hard top fitted I can't get it off on my own, so holding on as late as I can. Got the folks down this weekend and my Dad is looking forward to a ride in it as he's never been in one before. 8-)

Fitted mine last weekend, as I had to install the fitting kit as well, all seems ok except for creaks & groans, (from the car as well :) ), from reading various posts this may be due to the top sitting down too close to the rear bodywork, i will have to have a play at the weekend to resolve this

Had the roof down on mine this morning. HT will likely come out of storage at the end of the month - I usually do the swap when the clocks alter.

But misses the point of having a Roadster and enjoying top down motoring.
I'd rather have a coupé or performance hatch than keep the hardtop on all the time.

Well not only hard top on next weekend, but also bought the Alloys from Red Leader and intend kitting them with some quality winter tyres too.

So could be busy next weekend as hard top is definitely going on and then will decide about the 'new' alloys and tyres. They may go on too......or best not? Advice please from winter tyre specialists.

Fortunately am off to Mallorca for three weeks in Nov to make sure the Z4 there is still working and she needs new boots all round - heaven knows how much and how impossible that will be to get anything happening. Hopefully three weeks will be long enough.................the tyres on it are original and thus 8 years old with a huge 27k km on them, but they are degrading and wheel spin in 5th is not good!!! Plenty tread - but absolutely no stick.

Hey ho, first frost of the autumn here in Cambs overnight.

I'm leaving mine until November I think, although I can't wait to get it on as it makes the car look loads better. And it means I won't get caught in a heavy shower with the roof down like I did last night ... AGAIN :head:

Put mine on yesterday, made up some little rubber seals to try to stop where I think the rain was getting in before (in front of the boot lid edge where the gap goes upto the rear scuttle). I didn't get round to respraying it this summer, so it's not looking it's best in a scuffed metallic black, but I don't like the look with it on as IMHO it makes the car look like a shoe. I wonder how much I'll drive it now the hard top is on as the whole point of buying it was for roof down motoring. At least I can make sure the brakes, etc keep free by taking it out occasionally over winter, but the hassle of removing the hardtop means it will be a rare occasion to take the roof off between now and spring I think. If I didn't have my RS2000 in the garage then I wouldn't worry about using a hardtop, but then if the garage was available I would probably have a TVR instead of the 2 cars, so I can't have it both ways. :D

Put it on when I bought it on Friday. I took two bolts and a T40 socket with me. The tool on the socket wasn't long enough, so Halfords rescued me with a £13.99 set of Torx spanners :D.

Interesting couple of miles with just the clamps holding the roof on .

That's the point I don't really like driving it with the hardtop on so one is enough. :D I have a 320d Touring company car if I want to do long journeys apart from work stuff.

Well folks, here we are again a year down the line. My hardtop went on this afternoon - a bit later than last year because I had to get it on early due to an impending house move then. Let me be a bit boastful and show you my new garage (with the hard top still suspended from the hoist so there is an excuse!).

Today was my planned day too, but deluged in Cambs, so now have to wait for proper drying weather, as not putting it down damp. No way. Also want to grease the rubbers.......

Slightly off subject but have a hardtop that's being painted within the next couple of weeks and was wondering if anyone has taken the black roof trims out and filled the remaining strip for a smooth look? My roof has been painted by the previous owner and the rubbers are not a great fit, new ones aren't too expensive but was wondering if the groove could be filled with fibreglass then skimmed before primer or would it be more complicated? Any body shop guy's with an opinion on this........................

Depends on whether you like getting wet when you open the door - the rubber strips are supposed to act as gutters...

Mine's still not on and I even had the roof down yesterday. 8-)

Blonde moment..............didn't consider that Robert, but mine don't seem to work very well at channelling the water away from the doors so could be a disaster with them filled lol

I do not have a hard top yet I was thinking of getting one of those soft top covers the ones with the magnetic edge has any one tried these or anything better just thinking of trying to protect the top while it sits on the works car park and at night outside my digs or would it be best just to treat the top before the winter

Hard top on today.

After

Have to say I love this car so much. It's really like having two cars as the hard top changes the car's looks far more than just giving it a tin top.

Less happy when winter tyres and alloys go on as they are skinny and look well weird, but they do the job and keep my summer alloys pristine for summer.......

Am I happy I did not have my head turned by the Black Z3M??????..............You bet I am.

A days holiday today and I too managed to get some roof down action.

What I have done this week is remove my 18" ACS Type 1's and replace them with the original BBS 17" Type 42's for winter.

I love the look of the Schnitzers but the ride quality on the 17" is way better. Not sure I'll want to switch back next Summer!
