Bad day in my Z
Bad day in my Z
With only 3 weeks tax left and the sun shining thought I would go out in the Z wish i had stopped at home !!!
We had a nice little run around the lanes and then decided to go to the mother in laws, got on to the dual carriageway near to her home only to be broad sided by an E60 535 who was under taking the car in front.!!! He managed to hit my car just below the door lock on the drivers side buckling the rear wheel and blowing the tire at 70 spinning us sideways as I was just about to exit the slip lane. No one hurt my sacred the s**t out the wife
The only damage to his car is a scuffed front wheel !!!
The Z will need a door a wing and a wheel oh yes he's got £750 excess on his policy

^^+1 glad to hear you are both alright. Be cautious with your insurance company (if this is going through insurance) as Zs are being written off for very little these days.

Wow that sounds like it all happened too quick for you to do anything about, main thing is your both ok as has been said.

Re: Bad day in my Z
Sorry about the Zed but glad everybody is OK although probably quite shaken.
The £750 excess is not relevant as you are the innocent 3rd party so his insurers pay you out in full and the excess only applies to any payment for the damage to the car that hit you.
Hope that it all gets sorted quickly.

I think the car would be a write off so we have agreed to a private arrangement the driver of the 535 has already found a door and wing and knows of a good body shop so lets see what happensBrian H wrote:^^+1 glad to hear you are both alright. Kinda agree with this, I personally would have reported the driver for dangerous driving, undertaking at speed etc, reason why I've fitted an onboard cam too catch these tools.PCSAM wrote:with the style of the accident he caused on you . i bet he has made a few arrangement's for pvt repairs ....... his driving is dangerous he should be off the road but im glad you both are OK . cars can be repaired and replaced .. your lucky... on his driving i would have called the police and got him charged ....si-forks wrote:I think the car would be a write off so we have agreed to a private arrangement the driver of the 535 has already found a door and wing and knows of a good body shop so lets see what happensBrian H wrote:^^+1 glad to hear you are both alright. Really gutted for you, at least no one was hurt....very scary at that speed. It's wierd, as we passed a blue z3 today that was jacked up with it's rear wheel off - just by Worcester rugby club, was it you? By the sounds of your description being on a dual carriageway probably not?
Hope you get it all sorted soon, it's so upsetting when some idiot damages your pride and joy.

Re: Bad day in my Z
Be careful, if you've damaged the wheel like that get a 4 wheel alignment before you accept the panels from numb nuts.

Re: Bad day in my Z
I had a guy T-bone me recently, in the same panels as you, in May this year. Needed a new door skin, mirror, and a few internals. My car was a category B in 2006, (not in my ownership at the time) but I returned it to the road. When I was hit in May, I told the insurance company that I had 'No intention of reliquishing ownership of the vehicle'. This meant that even if they decided it wasn't worth fixing, that I would be keeping the vehicle. This may be of value to you, if the third party decides not to cover the cost of repair, and you have to go down the insurance route.si-forks wrote:With only 3 weeks tax left and the sun shining thought I would go out in the Z wish i had stopped at home !!!

Sorry to see the damage to your P&J; you must be pretty miffed.
I'm not sure I understand the sequence of events properly, but one thing's for sure, and that is that the story he tells his insurers will be somewhat different from the one you expected. "Lies, damned lies, and the other party's insurance claims", to paraphrase someone famous. Look to honing your version so that he is left no loophole to wriggle through.

Re: Bad day in my Z
Thanks Si, this has prompted me into action, so have just ordered a new 16" space saver and storage bag. Having looked at mine its looking a little worse for wear and with the tyre being 11 years old and partly exposed to the elements its not worth chancing it. I was doing some measuring earlier and it should fit in the boot strapped down with some ties. I'm not going to put it back in the under car cradle as A) I will just forget about it until the day I get a puncture and B) It will just rot again over time exposed under the car.si-forks wrote:Yes that was me ! Looking at your pics, how did the wheel get bent outwards? I can imagine the tyre must have deflated before the wheel hit something? I'm guessing you will get the suspension and chassis looked over as it doesn't take much of a knock on the wheel to cause suspension damage

Looks great - but 2 questions come to mind.
1. Why is it your hassle if you were not responsible?
2. Wouldn't it have been much simpler to just fix up the panels on the car?

I have an element of 'M-styling' on my car, If that's a good enough reason for the manufacturers to adorn a 320 with the M badge, then its certainly a good enough reason for me..
Re: Bad day in my Z
In my experience many body shops in my Bristol area, despite boasting of equipment worth hundreds of thousands of £, charge an absolute fortune, do a rubbish job, struggle to match metallic colours, spray over rust, tyres, windows and lights. Often they end up spraying half the car when the damaged area was quite small. To answer BonBon, I can fully understand why an owner might prefer to buy second hand panels (in the same colour) rather than paying a small fortune to the “professionals”. As you may have guessed by experiences have not been good – if anybody knows a good body shop in the Bristol area please share.
Re: Bad day in my Z
Yes you can buy the wheel separate a single wheel costs the guy who hit me £120 delivered and £10 to fit tyre which was totally undamaged even the tyre fitter couldn't believe itgookah wrote:so what is happening with the wheel? can you get a single one?

I agree with del 100 percent body shops are a total ripoff far easier to find the panels in the same colour and fit them myself which I'am happy to do ,at the end of the day these are undamaged panels which surely better than having the original panel fixed at a ridiculous costDel wrote:In my experience many body shops in my Bristol area, despite boasting of equipment worth hundreds of thousands of £, charge an absolute fortune, do a rubbish job, struggle to match metallic colours, spray over rust, tyres, windows and lights. Re: Bad day in my Z
Interesting - and slightly worrying - about what you say about bodyshops.
Mine is still in the bodyshop and apparently part of the delay with them starting the repair was with the bodyshop (ADR in Macclesfield) trying to convince the insurer that my car was a borderline write-off.
Bearing in mind that the quotes I'd got from local bodyshops when I thought I would be paying for it myself were around £700, I can't help but think that ADR are trying to maximise the repair.
Anyway, the planned completion date is now next Friday
Regards
Peter

Re: Bad day in my Z
I’m sure there are some good body shops around – it’s just that personally, I haven’t found one yet.
However, I have found by local “Chips Away” franchise very good. When I bought my Z3 (Arctic Silver) in 2011 the bodywork was good except for a nasty, deep scuff on the corner of the front bumper and a big paint chip in the middle of the same front bumper. They repaired both for their minimum charge of £100 + VAT and blended-in the paint under the front number plate. The paint match and finish is very good.
I think a lot of the big body shops are just churning out quick “flash over” jobs whilst they enjoy a feeding frenzy of easy business from the insurance companies.
