Got a BMW? Thicko thieves can EASILY NICK IT with $30 box

Post by John1950 »

This is a headline I noticed today so went and had a read.

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2012/09/17 ... heft_hack/

A question immediately came to mind as I read this. If this device can program blank keys, is this a way for us to get new key copies instead of having to pay BMW £150 for each one?
Is there a small business here for me?

I'm sure I posted on this when it was on the BBC News some months ago. In short, this is nothing to do with Z3s, as their electronics pre-date those that can program keys. The Z4 on the other hand...

Sorry Gary haven't got a clue  The Z4 wasn't included as 2012 build. BMW were contacting owners but I don't know how the selection process was undertaken.

They have only admitted there is a problem on post-07 cars, though pre-07 cars are still being stolen without the keys.

A VERY poor show by BMW - see the PH thread for more details

Thats probably because BMW did a cut off date to save them some pennies.

End of the day its not just BMW, any manufacturer that employs a key slot transponder is vulnerable, it was BMWs bad luck that the interior alarm had a blind spot where the OBDC is located

Anyone can have **** happen, it's how you deal with it that counts, and BMW's response has been appalling. It took Watchdog before they even admitted there was a problem, even though they had been told by many people who had had their cars stolen without the keys (even some CCTV).

As you say, I think they have chosen the cut-off of 07 to limit their liability. They have admitted that the code changes to pre-07 cars may have unintended consequences, so they have investigated it. This doesn't mean that the problem doesn't exist, but BMW's attitude is no solution = no problem. Unbelievable attitude.

Many of those in the know will not be buying BMW again, but there are lots of people out there who don't know the story and will make their next new car a BMW - good luck to them, I just hope nothing similar will happen, because the answer will be the same. We've had our cash, now bog off.

New Z4s may be affected, but E85 Z4s and E36 Z3s are not affected.

Year 2012 and on Z4s aren't affected. Know what you saying but it wouldn't put me off buying another Beemer. All cars have their chinks and all manufacturers are the same at the end of the day. I would never buy another Peugeot or Vauxhall as I've been on the end of their shocking customer support or lack of. I've only ever had good experiences with my BMW dealer.

I may do that as it also requires a Service and Warranty renewal.

I think its just a software update although I heard of one dealer fitting an isolation switch for the OBD socket which I would be very surprised at but I think it was something the customer was demanding lol.

After watching the Watchdog programme in September, and aslo proud owner of '57 plate M3, I phoned BMW - an 0800 number for this purpose. I was slightly taken aback when they told me that it might take 8 weeks for the local dealer to contact me. So now, some 20 weeks later, no contact so I enquired at my local dealer. No problem, just bring it in, simple as that. I wonder whether they would have contacted me at all, though.
