Take a look at my progress thread,

http://www.zroadster.net/forum/viewtopi ... 32&t=34180

I swapped my mirror for the ///M one. It wasn't difficult but you will need to put the electronics in it from your existing mirror. I've done a write up on it :D

The only function a Z3M rear view mirror has is manual dip.

Correct, the Z3M doesn't have auto dim.

The Z3M mirror is larger and causes a huge blindspot if you are around 1.83m tall, stick with the standard Z3 mirror.

And the M Roadster mirror is just as bad and wide as the original, but has curved sides. The mirror is too low, and in standard or M form is too wide.

I raised the mirror to the screen rail, and fitted a slightly convex mirror, which is wonderful.

When the roof is down I can see from the back of the passenger window round to my left ear, and see the limits of the window when the roof is up, but not quite as far back as the original. Plenty far away, though.

Mike
Interesting picture-roughly what size is your mirror please as I do not like the Z3 mirror as seems to restrict your vision a fair bit.
Is it just screwed with self tappers to the top of frame?

Thanks Gazza.

If follow the installation guide as Mr. ('_')Z3, then I can install the E39 M5 or E46M3 mirror.

Interesting discussion from a US board on mirror options and why the auto-dim mirror fitted to US versions is not a great idea.

My home-made pivot is bolted through the top of the screen rail - it os about the same size as the original, but high enough to avoid causing a blinf spot. I can now approach a hairpin bend and still be able to easily see around it before entry - it's great!

The mirror is an old clip-on type, which is fixed to a steel plate. These seem hard to find these days, but I would not be without it, and have used it on various cars for about twenty years.

I take it you have read the knowledgebase article on the subject? The implication is that the surround clips on over the mirror holding it in place.
('_')Z3 wrote: remove the front of the mirror, this is held in place by a series of clips around its edge, the sandard and ///M mirrors both clip the same way. It is this part that secures the glass in place.

I wonder if a Mini mirror could be made to fit?

It looks as though it mounts upwards, into the windscreen surround, rather than attaching to the glass (I'm sure someone on here will have a Mini and can comment). I guess it could be made to fit, in as much as you can make anything fit if you put enough work into it, but I'm guessing it wouldn't be an easy job.
