Front grille removal - items 1 and 2

Post by snoops »

Image Grille - BMW parts catalog

If there is a way to remove these and snap something I shouldn't then if I don't ask then that's exactly what will happen. Can someone explain or better still take a picture from the inside and tell me how to take these out please. Do I have to do the clips in any kind of order or use any special tool.

Thank you :D

Two ropes, a lamp post and a few feet in reverse should work. :D

I have an element of 'M-styling' on my car, If that's a good enough reason for the manufacturers to adorn a 320 with the M badge, then its certainly a good enough reason for me..

You can just ease the clips ;)

"I said knock it out, not touch it up...!"

Hit the black grill bit from the front, easy.

As Mad Max says, push the black grill in, they come out easily :)

So which is it guys

Push the grilles towards the engine and the chrome surround detaches or

Pull the whole thing towards me and the chrome surround will be detachable once they are out ?

Do I take it that those that have replied so far also don't really know

If you want to do it carefully, then the clips can be levered individually while pushing the black part from the outside and in towards the motor. I sit on the body in front of the radiator, with the hood up, and get it done that way. You will find that by doing one side - top edge or bottom edge - completely, the opposite side will come away easily without needing to spring the clips. A decent light source on the inner side will help...locate the clips.

I just swapped my grills yesterday, same process as on an e36 which I described above.

They are tricky that's for sure. When I took mine out recently it took me ages and the secret seemed to be, to detach the plastic chrome surround from the grill - which loosens the whole unit. I did this by gently pushing on each plastic chrome "spear" from the back i.e. pushing towards the outside (bonnet open). I could see that if your bonnet catch broke and you couldn't open the bonnet then you would have to try the alternative method above.

Thank you very much, appreciate the pictures and clear guide guys, happy to have a go now.... I'm happier cleaning and driving my car not taking bits off it, unless its the seats. :D

Just my 2 cents on this, I held one hand inside the bonnet and gave the black grill a few whacks from outside.. and voila!
