Underbody Rust Protection " Which one ? "

Hi All,
Have got the opportunity to use a vehicle lift/ramp at a garage early next year. I intend to wire brush the underside and then use an underbody sealant but "which one".
or are they all much the same....a guy in work does a lot of off road malarkey with his 4x4 and swears by stuff made by SHULTZ.

Don't know Schultz but used Hammerite Waxoyl on mine last year. Looks good so far but early days.
If you are doing the underside you really need to take the sills and wheel arch liners off and check sub-frame while you are at it

I'd be very wary of wire-brushing any of the zeds bodywork - the car is fully galvanised and body rust is comparatively rare - if you scratch through to the bare metal with a wire brush, you will essentially negate all the benefits of the galvanization, leaving the car more vulnerable to rust. Cleaning off with something like Jizer might be a better bet. Waxoyl is generally the recommended product for rust prevention on classic cars, so if I were to go for anything, it would probably be that.

Just thoroughly clean the underside and once dry give it a good spray with Dinitrol underbody wax,

Advantage over waxoyl is it doesn't dry out and remains slightly tacky.

Agree with Robert, wire brushing is the worst thing you could do

Just Waxoyled my daycar a|Kia Sorento had to thin it out with some white spirit to go throiugh the shultz gun on my compressor but it went on fine and it self seals if it gets scraped. Used black on the underside and clear in all the cavaties, sills and doors.
Bought the 5lt can and decanted into an empty shultz gun container I had to apply it.
Plan on doing the Z next.

One thing to do is to remove the wheel arch liners. Lots of crud gets caught behind there.

I used Waxoyl back in the 1970s when it first appeared on the market and was called “Finnigen’s Waxoyl”. Used it on a 1960s car, injected into the doors, box-sections and wheel arches – all areas where rust was a BIG problem in those days. I must say I was impressed and it seemed to stop the rust dead in its tracks.

I used a gallon in those days but since then I have always kept a handy aerosol can (clear Waxoyl) – recently cleaned all my Z3 rear brake pipes and coated them with it.

Rust doesn't appear to be a big problem underneath my Z3 but I do plan to power-wash under the wheel arches and spray inside there.

Thanks Guys.. for all the tips and advice regarding under body rust treatment.. when I mentioned wire brushing the underside (in OP) my intention was to just lightly remove any crud laying under there. Thought it would be better than power washing under there as I only have the use of the place for a few hours and didn't want to waste time waiting for it to dry off..

+ didn't know zeds were galvanised???

Just go with waxoyl I think.. readily available.

If you have axle stands to get it off the ground a bit then you can power wash and inspect in advance. Sills and wheel arch liners can be removed when on stands so you don't need a ramp. When you have it on the ramp also have a look at fuel tank hanger straps.

I used the following as i did not want to spray and could be more accurate with a brush. Hammerite now produce a specific car underseal product.

I do not like hiding the surfaces under a car as any missing could lead to rusting under the seal,
I used this stuff under the campervan, and will do parts of the zed before winter.

clear and self healing, comes in huge spray cans just pressure wash then spray on after a few days drying.

Agree with peterandjenny - I don't like the bitumen type products - on sound surfaces just clear wax e.g. Waxoyl, Dinitrol or the Bilt stuff shown.

On a rusty surface - where possible, good rub down, clean with solvent and then painted with something like Hammerite or Por15
