ASC on 1.9 1999 Z3
ASC on 1.9 1999 Z3
Folks looking for some info please.
I have had my z3 for nearly a year now. Decided for the first time to push the ASC button....no light appeared on the dash.
I turned the car off and started it again the light was ok on start up. I decided to read a thread on the ASC on how to fix it. The thread mentions a second cable coming from the throttle body and to check it was free and loose. When I lifted the bonnet there is only one cable fitted and it's the throttle cable it's self.
So is it just a button I have and no ASC fitted????
Cheers

Next step should be to get the codes read.
Re: ASC on 1.9 1999 Z3
Thanks Jonco. Without sounding stupid do you think the last owner may have removed the cable as a cheap fix for a code fault.

That's possible - it's amazing what people will resort to but I don't really know enough about it - no doubt somebody more knowledgeable will comment soon.Dek wrote:Thanks Jonco. Without sounding stupid do you think the last owner may have removed the cable as a cheap fix for a code fault.

I'll have a look in the TIS to see whether there's anything of use in there.

Re: ASC on 1.9 1999 Z3
My 1.9 has ASC, the light and button work appropriately, but I don't have the secondary throttle in the intake, or any evidence that it ever had one. The ASC still provides traction control through the ABS system.
You might want to check that the button hasn't come unplugged.

Good shout!
I am getting my parrot hand free kit fitted this week so would bea good opportunity to check.
If anyone else has any ideas fire them though.

Re: ASC on 1.9 1999 Z3
What is the build date of your car? April 1999 was when the facelift happened, so it is good to know which side of it you are - from the colour and model you have chosen, it sounds like you have a pre-facelift 1.9 with the 16-valve M44 engine - the same as mine. ASC+T was standard on this car.
If the ASC light comes on at startup, then the electronics sound like they checkout. I agree with the above that the most likely explanation is that the ASC switch has become unplugged, though it may of course have been deliberately unplugged, either because is causes a fault, or to simply prevent the driver from turning it off (perhaps the previous owner has a youngster that drove the car). Should be easy enough to check this.

i have a pre-facelift 1.9 M44 but have no ASC button?
Re: ASC on 1.9 1999 Z3
If have to access to INPA you can check switch operation through ASC module.
A rough check on whether ACS is trying to function is to jack rear wheels clear of ground, start engine and engage gear to rotate rear wheels only. ASC light should come on - or at least it did on mine!!

Re: ASC on 1.9 1999 Z3
Thanks for your replies and suggestions. Yes mines is the pre face lift model, silver and red leather. I will check the switch first and see if it's connected. ...might be possible the switch is faulty??
Just while I am replying just thought I would mention that I had my mot on Friday .....passed okay but the tester picked up on a damp off side front caliper, but doesn't think it is coming from there as the brake fluid level has not moved. It's not coming from the shocker either.........again any ideas?

If you put your VIN into http://www.bmwarchive.org/vin/bmw-vin-decoder.html it should show whether ASC was fitted. Mine is a Dec 97 build and ASC+T was standard.Mugs wrote:i have a pre-facelift 1.9 M44 but have no ASC button?
Re: ASC on 1.9 1999 Z3
i have had a look and it doesn't say anywhere about ASC?

Re: ASC on 1.9 1999 Z3
Not sure about that - it doesn't list it using the VIN decoder for my car, but I know full well that it has it, and the light comes on when you press the button.

Presumption was based on the main point that Mugs does not have the ASC button.Jonco wrote:.......Presume you don't have it ....
Agree something is amiss that Robert and colb have the button and ASC but ASC is not listed on VIN decoder.
Re: ASC on 1.9 1999 Z3
Will let you know the outcome on Friday if the switch is connected or faulty that's when parrot getting fitted..........but light defo comes on start up.

Re: ASC on 1.9 1999 Z3
i've just had a thought..... do i not have ASC because i have an auto?
Re: ASC on 1.9 1999 Z3
Mine's a `98 auto. What month/year was your build - there may have been a change from option to standard during the year.Mugs wrote:i've just had a thought..... do i not have ASC because i have an auto?
Re: ASC on 1.9 1999 Z3
Auto electrician tested the ASC switch today and that seems to be the culprit as his mega meter could not pick it up.
