Outside air temperature sensor location

Post by lebigmec »

Hi everyone,
I wonder if someone will be able to help me, please?
I am going to fit an OBC to my car, which is a 2001 1.9i M43 Facelift. I have got all the parts, OBC, Indicator stalk switch with OBC button, outside temperature sensor, (which I believe is all I will need!?), but I can't figure out where the sensor should go.. :dunce:
If anyone has a car like mine which already had an OBC fitted could have a look where the sensor should be located, I would be really grateful. Thanks.

According to the ETM tt's behind the front bumper on the RHS - there should be a two pin connector there for it.

Hi, I have the identical car and my sensor sits behind the front nearside blanking plate that sits beside the foglamp. This black plastic blanking plate has a small hole (1/4 inch) immediately in front of the sensor probe. The probe as I recall pushes onto slides, the wiring plug should be there already. Don't believe the average consumptioon readings as mine records up to 51mpg when 'tickled along' not exceeding 50mph!

Hope this helps, Adrian (alias BB)

On my pre facelift 1.9 it sat next to the n/s fog light.

On my facelift car the temp sensor sits in the lower centre front grill very near the o/s fog lamp.

Loving the mpg from a Temp sensor post... maybe thats the problem, you're reading MPG in degrees Fahrenheit?? :D

...No seriously I have read the whole post and I know where you are coming from - however, getting the temp sensor thread back on track, does anyone else find their outside temp reading is warmer than it actually is? I am talking about the outside temp guage in my M, seems to always be 5-10 degrees higher than the actual weather? Not sure if this could be a fault with the gauge or sensor (I am assuming the sensor?) If so, is it in the same place as the picture above with the green arrow?

Finally could it get damaged with a bit of a "rough road-bottomed out" incident? - The reason I ask is that I thought it was more accurate when I bought the car but then I went on the derbyshire cruise and whilst trying to keep up with Deano we ended up some rough country lane and the bottom of the car made one of those horrible BANG noises that we know are coming but cant help?

I think these things should be fitted somewhere at the rear... looking at the pics, it seems the engine temp might have a bearing on the sensor unless one is actually driving ??

I've checked, BBC weather it was reporting 17 deg c, Z3 was reporting 18 deg c, and I placed the end of this alternative sensor into the front of the lower bumper grill near the Z3 sensor, that reported 19.3 deg c but I moved it to take the pic and it started rising in the cab

Seems like yours is pretty much bang on. I am going to have to do some testing on mine and will report back. Can someone confirm where the sensor is on my S50?

cheers - I will have a look for it and put an independent sensor in the same place for comparison purposes. (rear of the arch or front?)
