2.0 misfire

Post by z3nomness »

So i plugged the C110 code reader in after noticing a bit of a misfire in the Z3 on the way home last night.

it threw up a misfire on 3 and 5 cylinder.

apart from checking the cat, would replacing the spark plugs help?

if its the coils do i need to replace all 6 or only the ones identified by the code reader? and are they plug and play??

Have a look at the plugs, do you know when they were replaced? The coil packs are all identical so you could swap them around and see if the fault moved with them. This would show whether the coils were the problem at least. Good luck!

Thanks for the reply.

I'll start with new plugs and see if that helps.

You will struggle to clean this as all Zeds are fuel injected and have no carb.
Easiest test is to swop the coil packs over and run for a bit and then connect the code reader again and see what it says. It needs to run for 1/2 hour for the codes to register so have a drive round.

 :head:

gaah, I meant the ICV, but with carburetor cleaner. which leads me on to another question. should I use carb cleaner??

Changed the plugs, they were manky, still missing a little bit though. Ill plug in the code reader again tomorrow and swap around the coil packs.

Its been a long day :(

Southernboy found a YouTube video recently of someone swapping the coils over to do a quick check to identify if they were the issue - I'm sure he will be along soon

Often, those codes appear due to a dirty MAF. Take the MAF and air filter out and clean both. use gas or a brake cleaner to clean the MAF. Whenever i used to get random mis-fire codes, it was always a dirtly MAF. I would clean and the codes would disappear.

So I tried cleaning and then installing a new MAF, but to no avail.

New coil pack arrived in the post today, I'll clear the misfire codes and install the new ones tomorrow and hope for the best :)

My experience of these rather anonymous cylinder misfire codes (P0300-P306) is that they can be ignition coils (although it would be unusual for a car with 6 individual ones to have 2 fail together) or something mechanical like spark plugs, fuel injectors, internal engine problems or a vacuum leak. The latter is very common on older BMWs so I would have a very close inspection of the rubber vacuum pipework particularly the big "bellows" next to the MAF sensor. :(
