Best Vanos repair kit ?

Post by Gordon13 »

So, Ive had the Z for a week and a half now and put lots of happy miles on it, however, it is displaying all the symptoms of Vanos failure, not rattling, but poor performance under 3k, and a pronounced 'hic up' as you pull away.

Original owner had the inlet cam position sensor changed, ive found the receipt, its a GSF one. Are they any good ??

I plugged it into Carsoft which showed 'inlet cam position sensor - fault' so i cleared that and reset the adaptations. Fault hasn't returned, so i suspect the person that fitted it didnt think to or couldn't clear the fault

The result was very noticeable, more power and better pull away, but not perfect and still not what i would expect from a 2.2, so after a little more research I changed the exhaust cam position sensor for a genuine one.

A little improvement again, so i reset the adaptations again and again a little more improvement.

So all in all, a few little things have made an good improvement but its not quite there - if you know what i mean.

Therefore I now believe its time to look at the Vanos units.

Its an m54 with 45,000 miles but that said its still 14 years old.

Which company do the best seal kits ?

This company http://www.i6automotive.co.uk/vanos-seal-kits/ do a very comprehensive kit for £22 - sounds too cheap ??

Or this one http://www.mrvanos.com/BMW-Twin-Vanos-M54(2722826).htm but you only get the seals for twice the price

Any other suppliers that can be recommended would be useful.

Thanks Gordon
