Cruise control
Cruise control
I know there has been a lot of discussion about retro fit cruise to the Z3 but after having spoken to my local BMW agent I am now totally confused.
I have a 99 2.0 facelift model and was under the impression that the throttle was a fly by wire system.
I am told my car has a mechanical action to a certain point and then fly by wire from there on.
Will the interface kit operate this system ?
The dealer has quoted
£58 for the Interface
£134 for the switch !!!!
£9.00 for the knob
Obviously I should be looking to source the switch elsewhere so if anyone has any ideas or contacts for used switches please help me!!

Re: Cruise control
I have retro fitted it to my 99 2.0 and it takes about 5 minutes excluding time to cut the hole in the steering wheel cowl.
All as you need is the switch and the interface. The interface normally has to come from the dealers as they are pretty rare second hand but that seems a reasonable price they are quoting you.
The switch is best to be sourced second hand and it will usually have the knob attached to it. Your best bet is eBay and if you cannot find one in the UK then the USA is your best option. You can pick them up for around 25 quid but make sure is the correct part number as there is a couple of different types and then its just plug and play from there.

Re: Cruise control
When you fit the cruise control does a light come on the dash to indicate that the cruise control is on?
Re: Cruise control
Managed to source a switch from the States at a cost of £36.64 including post and import tax. Thanks for your advice
Going to order Interface from Dealer.

Re: Cruise control
Soper's in Lincoln will send you an interface for less than book price including p&p.
In my experience it does take five minutes but you have to factor in the hour of frustration to find the hidden connector for the interface!

Re: Cruise control
The cruise control is de-activated by the clutch and brake pedals...How do you know when it's on??? Well, you don't need to have your foot on the gas....
Once fitted, have a look at the instructions on the control / column lever... it's pretty self explanatory....
Finding the interface connection is simple... look for a connector which is "unconnected"... look at it and the connector on the interface and if they look like they belong together, you're likely at the right place... there's not a heap of "vacant" connectors under the steering column area, so it's not likely you'll make any mistakes... It is generally tucked away though....

Tucked away, he says! "It's hidden in the bottom of a locked filing cabinet stuck in a disused lavatory with a sign on the door saying 'Beware of the Leopard'." HHGTTG paraphrase mode = OFF
Serious chaps, it is very, very tucked away and bound up in a loom bandage on the top of a big umbilical bundle of cables. It's there all right, but you have to stick your butt in the air to find it!

Re: Cruise control
....... anyone else you know who shoots blindly through a door before he checks if the love of his life is safe ???
Re: Cruise control
Wow!
All that about trying to find the plug and after taking off the scuttle panel, there it is just hanging loose as they say.
Just waiting for the lever from Cincinatti, U.S.A and we should be good to go.
Do I need to have the system set up by my pet BMW specialist?
Thanks for everyone's help guys.

I have an element of 'M-styling' on my car, If that's a good enough reason for the manufacturers to adorn a 320 with the M badge, then its certainly a good enough reason for me..
