im using 5w30 fully synthetic in my m44, I find if I use 10w40 in the winter it struggles to start and has a miss fire for around 30 seconds or so.

Halfords 5w30 Fully Synthetic in the pinkish container that is on offer at £12 is in my 1.8 Z3, no problems using it. Been in today to get cans for all my cars which use 5w30 so I have some handy in the spring when I service them.

Standard Z3s haven't got complex, modern-day, fuel injection and emission control systems and so are not too fussy about engine oil. Most fully synthetic 5W-40, 0w-40 or 5W-30 types would be OK. The latter tends to be a common modern-day recommendation where ultimate fuel efficiency is being sought. In my view more important to just keep the oil and filter clean & changed regularly.

Thanks gents, I'll pick up some 5w30 tomorrow if I get chance. I always change the oil and filter every year with synthetic oil, usually after about 4k miles.

Don't forget to change the filter as well and dispose of the old oil at your local council recycling centre.

When you refer to a K&N filter I think your referring to an Air Filter, what you want for your oil change is the oil filter which comes with the rubber O rings.
http://www.carparts4less.co.uk/oil-filter
If you are new to changing oil have a look on YouTube lots of how to videos on there explaining method.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=siwSXpikYQU
This one makes no mention of the two smaller O rings on the stem of the filter housing, if they are included with your replacement filter then yous should change them.

As to a K&N air filter I always use the normal paper element type, Oily K&N filters have been known to upset the sensor in the Maf causing running problems if over oiled.

Thanks! Saw this on tv earlier today.

What's the consensus on the quality of this oil? I see it meets the LL-01 standard, but guess it's no patch on e.g. 0-40w mobil one new life?

The Halfords oil meets the declared specs and is a bargain considering how often most of us change our oil.

They couldn't afford to sell an inferior product risking people claiming damages if it didn't do the job.

Not sure who manufactures their oils but it's a fair bet its one of the leading brands and just packaged as Halfords as are most of the Supermarket brands.

After a bit of research it looks like Halfords Oils are supplied and packaged by Comma Oil.
Used Comma in the past without problems but not at the Halfords price.

its a good price, i popped in & loaded the micra with 8 containers of it-that should be enough for two oil changes each for the z3 & z4.
I think that regular changes of engine oil keep the ccv clean & will stop any oil burning this can cause as well as lowering normal wear/tear to the engine parts.

If memory serves me, I'm sure they do this offer at least twice a year. As you have to buy two tubes of oil making 8 litres and the car only takes 6.5 litres with this purchase I have enough for two oil changes :D

Just been to the local Halfords...

For info: the £12 oil in question no longer states "BMW LL-01" on the label (as still shown on website).

Anyone else notice this?? Should we care?

Hi
I only cover around a 1000 miles a year

Not checked my bottles but the guy in store had a look on his interweb and stated there was very little difference between the one on offer and the bmw oil they sell which was not on offer

The comma spec sheets are available on their website

Anyone used the k&n oil filters or do I pick one up from the dealers

Thanks for the info

Please note the first No. is semi synthetic, the second No. is fully synthetic.

What I mean is over the oil changes the 1.5 litres that is left after each oil change will mount up, so one year you should have enough oil to do an oil change. :D
So all you have to buy is an oil filter

as we are discussing oil, heres what happened to me recently - last year my car failed its emissions test quite badly, thankfully due to a strange quirk of fate it didn't stop the certificate being issued (tester gave me a failure sheet with the emissions report with a few bulbs out, hand brake efficiency fail and a failed ball joint. I repaired the offending issues and threw away the emissions report and took car back, he quickly checked the parts on the list and passed it). this year I took the z back and it passed the emissions test easily, the only difference this year as far as I can see is the oil. last year it had 10w40 but as the weather cools it became harder to start and would run on 2 cylinders for around 8-10 seconds on start up before settling down, the idle was always rough. I changed to a thinner 5w30 and the difference was instant, idle fine and cold starting as it should. this is on an m44 z, I have never had my engine apart but does the oil have anything to do with the valve train on the m44? (does it have hydraulic lifters or a hydraulic cam chain tensioner of any description, this is the only way I can imagine how the thinner oil has made a difference)
