Brakes - help

Post by Buz007 »

Hi Everyone,

I'm putting a list of jobs together for the new year, one of which is to remove andrespray the brake calipers. I was wondering if anyone had done this recently and knew the thread direction of the main bolt which holds the calipers for all 4 corners? Just to save me sweating at the end of a spanner pushing of pulling the wrong way! :dunce: if anyone could offer any help or direct me to a thread that would be brill!

Also I'm getting all 4 alloys shotblasted, resprayed and laquered for 60 quid a corner which seems good to me, they will collect your wheels and send em back if anyone else is interested?

Thanks and happy new year

All the threads are RH threads. The only LH thread on the Z3 that I can think of is the viscous fan.

Gookah has done this on his wifes car I think - look for the thread link on one of his posts. I have recently changed one of my calipers on my 2.0L - was nice and simple, bleeding the brakes was the hardest part.

Must admit, having seen the condition of the old caliper I wouldnt much fancy a DIY attempt at refurbing it. BIGGRED do refurb calipers if you like in lots of different colours.
Here come the girls.....

I refurbed our calipers last year went quite easy as long as you have access to a vice and drill with a wire brush. Replaced the seals and dust covers and bleeding the brakes was simple with an 'easy bleed' kit.

Thanks guys,

Won't the brake pipes clamp to save bleeding the whole system?

If you push the brake pedal slightly and hold it in place with something the holes from the master cylinder are covered and then the fluid won't drain out. Clamp the flexis as well or if you want I have some blank plugs for the brake pipes I could post or bring round if you are near Leicester/Coventry.

Just looked on your profile and W Yorks.

Unless your car has had the fluid changed recently (very doubtful) it would be false economy to save the old fluid - and the old hoses have probably become hardened anyway, making the use of clamps difficult.

So - the job properly, or not at all!

Calipers do not get very hot in road use, four coats of Finnigans Smootherite over their red oxide primer being fine, and lasting for ever. The popularity of powder coating etc on brake calipers comes from people who do not want to do anything themselves, and prefer to pay others to do things.
A Z3 is not just for Christmas - it's for life!
