Whirring rattle noise

Post by Alan W »

Can't think of a better way to describe it, a whirring rumbly rattle.. remotely like someone is rotating a plastic bottle full of gravel.

Okay my first thought was the twin vanos unit or that pointless USA spec electric extractor emission thing...

Then I popped the bonnet and got up close and it doesn't seem to be coming from either of those..

Definitely front of engine but sounds a bit lower down and I am guessing water pump or timing chain?

Any suggestions what I should do to eliminate all of these?

Many thanks in advance

Sounds as if it is the tensioner pulleys for the drive belt. If your tensioners look like mine you cannot get the pulley but need the revised tensioner Old one on the right and new on left. They are a straight swap even though they pick up on different bolt holes.

It is usually the main belt that fails and not the aircon one. Got my replacement from GSF as they were nearer to me.

I'll bet it's the water pump.
Take a short piece of garden hose and use it as a stethoscope. You should be able to locate the source of the whining.

Yes they are the right way round but I hadn't done the tensioner pulley bolt up on the new one as it has to be off to fit the mounting bolts, hence the idler looking drunk.
