Will the Z3 3.0 price icrease as has the Z3Ms

Post by johnz3 »

There have been two posts on her recently. One concerned what is a Z3M worth from john1950 and the other from yaldon who wants to buy a 3.0 Z3. It seems to be agreed that the Ms are rising in price and I would suggest that a very decent one with low miles for its year would be around £10k to £12k as a private purchase. Yaldon's post seems not to have aquired him a 3.0 and I wonder if the 3.0 is a rare model and given that, and that the Ms are rising in price, so the 3.0s will.

Any views?

I don't think a 3.0 will go up in value more quickly than a 1.9. Look at a "standard" Escort (regardless of engine size) compared to the "performance" versions. The Mexico or the Cosworth will always be more sought after than the standard model, no matter how good, or how powerful it is.

95% of the car is the same, but the biggest difference is the badge. If the M only had a handling pack, it would be more sought after. As it is, it has had a handling pack and a power plant enhancement.

The 3.0 gives a better bang for your buck. 95% of the car for 75% of the cost.

I think pingu has hit the nail one the head there. They will always make sensible money but they'll never reach M money. I was having the same conversation with a work mate only 2 hours ago about the 2.8. He thought that because they weren't in manufacture that long that they would make a premium. As much as I would have liked to agree with him as I own one I stated that would not be the case sadly. :(

I disagree that the 3.0 won't rise in value faster than the 1.9. They are different cars. The smaller engine car is great, kind of BMW's take on the MX5. The 3.0 is practically a junior supercar, it certainly matches my old Ferrari for performance, and my Elise S2 would struggle to get past it.

However any pristine low mileage Z3 will always make the money, as with most older cars. The best condition cars will always sell....£4800 for an 11,000 mile Vauxhall Chevette 1.3 anybody?

The perceived scarcity of the 3.0 version in good condition is largely due to similar pressures on the M prices - those who own them simply don't want to sell them. They are considerably more powerful than the 2.8 with all the agility of a BMW straight 6 lump up front without the extra weight of the cast iron block of the M cars. I would suggest the 3.0 fitted with a Vortech V2 supercharger by a professional mechanic / shop would be the ultimate balanced Z3 version. Sadly, the V2 system designed specifically for the Z3 is costly at around £4500 for the complete kit and excludes any labour. US$ 6500

Although the picture in the eBay link below doesn't show an M version BMW, (USA M badging perhaps) you can read the product description and get an idea of what a "professional, purpose made supercharger" will provide.....

Well.....the guy says he has been looking for a Z3 3.0 for two years.
I sent him details of my near concourse low mileage Topaz Blue 3.0 (and no l don't want a silly price for it) and a week after he received the message l have had no reply either way (interested/not for me)

Somebody else has expressed interest now though. I was surprised to get no reply at all. The car is pretty much as good as you'd get.
These have to go up in value one day. They have already overtaken the early Z4 3.0 which good though it is, l don't think will become a "Classic" like the Z3.
My brother's friend has one. It looks great but drives like a 3 Series. No bad thing, but it does not feel "special" and l guess is aimed at the modern driver who wants the sports car look with saloon ease of ownership.

I would expect them to go up eventually...
however the nice thing at the moment is that they are at virtually rock-bottom price, so they can't really go down...
makes it a very cheap car to own / run
