2.0l 2000 Z3 Questions

Post by RPMW08 »

Hi all,

New Z3 owner here with a couple of questions which I hope you can help with. My car is a 2000 model with the 2.0L straight 6. Love it already!

Firstly, on the centre console next to the hand break there is a pocket moulded into the console. At the front of this there is a small insert which clips in, but at the back there is nothing. However, there does appear to be a clip which looks like it should have something clipped into it? Should anything go in here?

Secondly the air bag light is on. I have read a few things about this been the seat mat on the passenger side and can be fixed with a bypass switch? Anyone got a link to a suitable part?

And lastly, it needs some new mats. Lots of places doing them but does anyone have any recommendations.

Thanks,

James

Hi James,

I'm not quite sure what you mean about the centre console - can you get a picture?

The airbag light will probably just be a bad connection, but you need a diagnostic tool to reset it and that will point you in the right direction.

Hi peter2b,

Yes, I had seen those things on eBay, but wasnt sure what experience people had had with them. I may pop the car into a garage to hook it up the the diagostics and go from there.

I am based just outside Leamington Spa. I have heard Autotech in Warwick a pretty handy with BMW's. Anyone have any experience of them?

As regards floor mats, there are always lots to buy on the internet, but in the past I have bought ones which dont fit very well. If anyone has experience of a good place to get some, that would be really useful.

Cheers, James

If you have a laptop, you can set yourself up with all the diagnostics you need for less that one diagnostic session at a workshop.

For missing parts ping spursfaninacoupe

Re the airbag light, it's probably a chewed wire under the seat (often the drivers) that just needs repairing and then the reset tool used to reset the light... Much cheaper than taking it to an indie. There are plenty of posts about it on here (btw the light will be MOT fail if you don't resolve it)

Here is picture of my centre console. As you can see there seem to be some clips screwed into the bottom of the rear pocket which looks like something should be clipped into. Still can't find a suitable part.

I don't believe there was anything there as standard, maybe that is where an old 'car phone' cradle lived?

Could also bee fittings for the armrest/cup holder but I'm not sure how the mount up.

That would be my thought. The ashtray is not right either - all the ones I have seen have a lid which you touch to open - that looks more like the tray that sits in place of the rear switch tray (for cars with no switches). I've not seen the standard phone option fitted to know what it looks like, sorry.

The small tray is standard when you have the non-smokers package, I have one for my car. I can't for the life of me think want should be behind it, I have had an armrest fitted for so many years now. Is it just a rubber mat?

There might be a mat in the facelift. Pre-facelift is just an empty tray with the same finish as the rest of the console.

I didn't spec non-smoker on mine, so I have an ashtray. I like it as it has a lid and so I have wired the USB connection from my HU to there and can hide a USB key inside.
