How do you change the plugs on a 1.9 Roadster using the BMW

Do I have to take the wing off?
Seriously, very new to the joys of Z3 ownership and tinkering, but the BMW supplied 16mm plug tool just seems way too long, or am I being a numpty?!
Help and advice much appreciated!

The 'splug' (as I call them) tool along with the long rod supplied in the toolkit are just the right length, if I recall. Number 1 (closest to bumper) might need the socket placed in position before threading rod through, but I remember not needing any other tool. I think you might be overcareful, though I think plugs number 1 and 2 aren't easy to reach on bigger engines.
Have another go, I'm sure you'll be fine.

Unlike the 6 cylinder engines, the 4's do have HT leads. The plug caps on these are surprisingly long. Once removed the spark plug is right at the bottom, so you do need the long tube to reach them.

It's a pretty easy job, even I can do it! there should be a blue ht lead removal tool under the plug cover, very handy as the leads can be very tight on to the plugs!

edit, just realised yours may be the 8 valve engine but probably similar, apologies if not.

You'd be amazed the difference a new (decent) set of plugs can make - well I was! Be careful not to cross thread or over tighten

Did mine on the 1.9 by Cutting off a piece of garden hose about a foot spread over ceramic part of plug lowered in and finger tightened
then lowered socket to complete. Did try with just socket plug kept dropping out. Hose worked for me!

The plugs are under the cover that runs down the centre of the cylinder head not to one side. The plug leads run from the black box (Coil pack) around and under the cover and are quite well buried into the head. A magnet is useful to lift the plugs out if using the bmw box spanner.
