Wheel width query

Post by Zed-dan »

I have recently bought a set of style 78's however all four are 8j x 17 eh2 size. My question is will these fit the front? If not, what mods (spacers) or setup (offset) needs to be changed?

Can no one help? I don't want to have to buy 4 new tyres of which I'll only be using two!

BMW wheel rim style 78 I think they were called lightweight wheels in The Z3 catalogue.
They are 7.5 x 17 front and 8.5 x 17 rear on my 2.2 sport.

Seems an odd size offset for style 78s, I've only ever seen then 7.5 or 8.5j with et 41, the standard size for our cars at the front is as Vic says, 7.5 x 17 et 41. The details should be on the front of the wheel just near the holes for the wheel bolts.

If your wheels are 8j x17 et 2 then I am afraid they will not fit as they will stick out too much, 45mm more than stock.

Damn.

I am led to believe that they were an option on an M3?

That's what I was told by the guy I bought them off...

what are the legal guidelines on wheel protrusion? there is a bit of a gap between my current wheels and the edge of the arch... could the 45mm extra simply fill this?

and as a 8.5j fits the back my 8j should fly on :)

On the front a 8 x 17" wheel with an offset of 47 will sit no further out than a stock wheel however you will have 12mm less clearance on the inside, with this in mind you will need some form of spacer to help clear the suspension strut.

On the rear of the car a 8 x 17" wheel with an offset of 47 will sit 12mm further in the rear arch and the inner clearance will be the same.

The above calcs are based upon a standard staggered set as per below: -

Front 7.5 x 17 et41
Rear 8.5 x 17 et41

Thank you so so much.

Spacer shopping I guess! Is it better to wait, see and measure as I'm a total amateur at this or guestimate? Ideally i would like the wheels to fill the arches and be more "flush"...

i would just offer them up before you buy spacers.
6mm less clearance at at the back shouldn't rub on anything.

I have just bought a pair of 5x120x20mm hub centrics from mtec racing for £39.99 including the 41mm bolts.
To get the correct size offer a piece of flat wood at the Base of the wheel vertically upto the outer edge of the wheel arch then measure the gap from the inside edge of the wood to the tyre wall at the top of the wheel. I'd guess you'd be around 10-20mm. That measurement will be the size of spacer required.
