Warning light - gearbox electrics?

Had a light come on tonight...............a toothed cog with an exclamation mark in the middle. Referred to user manual and it's some sort of gear selection electrical fault.

Can anybody shed some more light on this for me, thanks?

Handbook explanation for this warning light as follows
Electronic transmission control
module
If the indicator lamp comes on
there is a fault in the transmission
system.
All of the selector lever positions can
continue to be used; in the forward
drive positions, however, the vehicle
will be operating with restricted gear
availability.
If this happens, avoid extreme engine
loads and consult the nearest BMW
center.

Maybe diagnostics will pinpoint what is the problem.

Found this on the web, looks like getting it plugged in to diagnostics is the way to go in order to see what its reporting, however there is a test you can make described in the link.

Has it gone off when you have restarted the car? If so all ok car has had a giddy bout. If still on needs to be on diagnostics.

Have you checked the fluid level? I know of an instance where this light was showing due to low automatic fluid level, Just a thought?

I agree, I have seen a lot of instances where automatic gearbox "niggles" have been sorted out by an oil and filter change. If you have no evidence of this being done in recent years, might be a good thing to start with, before moving on to more involved possibilities.

Restarted the next day and light still there.
Tried it again tonight and gone.

Getting a full service, oils changed and diagnostics and will report back.
