Name that part!

Post by Cheeseandbeans »

Afternoon!

I was just looking at an issue with the radiator cooling fan on my Z3. After removing the cover for the top of the cooling fan there is an air duct in there that was in a realy bad way. Does anyone know the official name for this so I can get a replacement?

Thanks

I have an element of 'M-styling' on my car, If that's a good enough reason for the manufacturers to adorn a 320 with the M badge, then its certainly a good enough reason for me..

So, do you have a viscous fan in your 1.9?

You'll have to excuse my ignorance but what is a viscous fan?

Next question then. Does anyone know where I can get one of those? They seem to have a plastic connector on both ends but one is missing from mine! Checked ebay but nothing seems to be available.

A viscous fan is a fan driven by a viscous coupling/viscous clutch. Unlike a permanently coupled fan, the fan can essentially idle whilst the engine is cool. It will rotate, but it doesn't place a lot of load on the engine. When the engine gets hot, the coupling locks and the fan is driven at the speed of the engine (or at least a speed proportional to it). The viscous couplings do fail over time, so it is worth checking yours whilst you've got it in bits. It should rotate relatively freely when cold (with the engine off), and be stopped by a rolled up newspaper with the engine running. When hot it should lock and make a noise like a WWII fighter plane when you blip the throttle. :D

AFAIK all pre-facelift M44-engine 1.9's (like yours, and also mine) have a viscous coupled fan.

I was going to suggest getting a price from Coopers for the ducting, but their site is offline at the moment - http://cooper-bmw-parts.co.uk/ - these are main dealer prices.

Another useful site is http://www.bmminiparts.com/ - they offer genuine parts at a discount, but don't stock that much for the Z3 any more - though I did see they had an M44 air filter going.

Have a look in the Stock Exchange on here to see if anyone is currently breaking a car - the ducting is a pre-facelift 1.9 only part, but other parts are common to more models.

Cheers R.

Not so. Mine doesn't - possibly because it has aircon.

It's fair to say that that tubing looks in poor condition in most M44 1.9s - it does in mine. I think they look worse than they actually are as the thin/flimsy outer plastic coating which covers the insulating sponge tends to flake away - I simply wrapped mine in heat reflective, silver tape. All this pipe does is attempts to supply a reasonable amount of cold air to the air filter box (and on to the engine) as cooler, denser air is better for the combustion process.

The tubing may look poor but it is made up of an inner and outer part, the outer part/jacket is some form of heat shied to try and keep the air cool as it passes through.

no mine doesn't either - again fitted with aircon so it has an electric fan.

I forgot about aircon. I suspect that the viscous fan just wouldn't work with it. I was thinking more of some of the later 8-valve engines that were fitted only with electric fans, whereas all the (non-aircon) M44's had viscous coupled fans. Sorry for any confusion.

Why not just buy some suitable-sized foam pipe lagging, or cover the existing lagging with aluminium heat reflective tape?
