Rattle from rear right area!?? Suspension top mount?

Post by Ollie ///M »

Recently bought a 3.0 and noticed with the roof down today that there is a distinctive rattle from the rear area around the wheel? Very difficult to pin point, however from memory of the M roadster I had to replace the rear suspension top mounts?! Does anyone know what I'm looking at for this repair if it is that!?!?

Or it could be the brake/handbrake mechanism.

Is it a metallic rattle?

Whilst hearing the noise try gently pulling on the handbrake, if the noise stops it will be the handbrake mechanism as Joycey says.
Speaking from personal experience the rear mounts noise is more noticeable with hood up rather than down.

If it is the brake mechanism, you may have to remove the rear drum to access the hand brake parts. At the bottom (6 'o' clock) you will see 2 small bolts holding the fulcrum block for the brake shoes. I had the rattle, and found that the one screw was considerably loose, and the other was partly loose. I think it was a No. 10 socket required to tighten them up. I used some BLUE thread locker when I did the repair so that would reduce the chance of them becoming loose again.
Removing the drum is simple enough. Wheel off, handbrake off - remove the single screw holding the drum in place and tap the drum with a wood mallet or such to get it off.

Rear aftermarket pads can also rattle in the caliper. Try bedding the prongs out a little on the piston side and a dob of copper grease on the back of the other pad.

I was lucky with mine, I was able to silence the rattle by lifting the handbrake gaiter and taking a little slack out of the cable that was causing the tinkling/rattling noise. I tightened the adjusting nuts very slightly and was careful not to overdo it and make the brakes bind on.
This was a few years back and the rattle hasn't returned.
