Top mounts rattling after swapping out..!

Post by webrits »

After getting sick of some little knocking from the rear I decided to swap out both top mounts.
Problem is they're both now making more noise than they ever did!!
Wtf?
Anyone know why that might be? Is there something obvious I've done wrong?

Thanks all.

have you got the dished washers on the top the right way round?
they should be cupped away from the mount. i found out the hard way and put them on upside down and they rattled like hell.

Did you replace the gasket between the mount and the body? I find that two gaskets make a difference.

Also - did you use the original nuts with built-in washers? use of ordinary nuts with washers is known to generate noise.

Are you sure it is the top mounts?

Could it be the "vibration dampers" the 6 cylinder cars have hidden behind the bumpers?

Pretty sure it's the top mounts based on the location of the rattle.
Maybe I'll try 2 gaskets as our very own language expert suggested....!

To test the mounts, get a friend to ride along with you and feel the mount from inside the car, they do move slightly but anything above slight indicates a problem.

I've heard of unbranded, ebay budget, rear top-mounts failing from new but not those from either the OE manufacturer Lemforder (which can be bought for less without the dual BMW branding) or the Meyle HD ones which I fitted to my car a few years back (along with numerous others on this forum) and they have been trouble-free for me.

just another thought....... put a washer behind the head of the bottom shock bolts. these can sometimes bottom out in the hole and cause the shock to rattle. this will then reverberate up through the top mounts and make it sound like they are rattling.
