door card fittings

Post by peter2b »

can any one tell me are the clips that hold the drivers side door card on can be got as spare parts as yesterday on the way back from the classic car show my passenger who helped me fit the hard top thought he was helping me as I was getting a draft by my right ear so he reached over and thinking that I hadn't shut the door fully gave it a tug :( , he's a big lad didn't know his strength and pulled the door panel off at the bottom busting at least 2 fittings that hold it into place :head: , that look like white square plugs, are they bonded to the door card?

Have a look at these

The clips are glued onto the door card and then you push the other end into the metal of the door to keep it secure.

The white clips are available but the black plastic pieces that they hook into on the door cars get pulled off sometimes, they can be glued back on though but need time to cure if you use contact adhesive. You can use hot glue sticks which is how they were fixed at the factory.

A hot glue gun is the best solution. Just make sure you apply a liberal and large area of glue. The door card material deteriorates and can be "flaky" which means a thin layer of it can pull off. Some small (4mm) holes drilled around the clip at a distance of aprox 20mm into which the hot glue can be injected as part of the adhesion will help to provide a better key for the glue and to hold the card material together.... Just mind when drilling, the card material is only about 3 - 4 mm thick.
Alternately first "soak" the card material around the clip fitting area with superglue so it hardens and bonds the card material, then drill several small holes as described above and finish with the hot glue gun.

Don't know if anybody is interested, but I recently needed to replace some of the black plastic pieces on my door cards as a few were missing, and as far as I know BMW don't supply these separately I modelled some up in 3D CAD and had some parts made in a strong nylon material using a 3D printing process. The problem for me was that I only needed 3 pieces but to get the minimum order I had to get 22 pieces made (!) so I have a few spares hanging around, if anybody is interested let me know via a PM or reply on the forum and I'll see what I can do, I'm sure we can come to some arrangement. If anybody wants to see any piccies again let me know and I'll post some up.

FYI I've used these on my doorcard and they seem to work just as well as the originals; regarding fixing them to the card I actually used some fibreglass matting as my doorcards were in pretty bad condition around the fixings and this also strengthened these areas.

They fit onto the door card. The press in clips fit into the hole you can see in the pics, and they clip into the holes in the sheet steel of the door.

found my hot glue gun I used 1 glue stick on each bracket all clicked into the holes bar 1 seems the hole is over sized or the clip is duff , all a lot better now it was one of the old white plugs so I will change that for a new one, the I did find out there is a bolt behind the mirror switch that has a bit of plastic on it that looks like it should be attached to the switch mounting , that's again wonderloaf they seem to do the job

Yeah I noticed that the clips were a bit looser than the originals, but thought rather that than too tight! Re the glue gun I tried that but it didn't hold the brackets so went down the fibre glass resin route as I had some in the garage. If for any reason you're not satisfied let me know and I'll refund your money.

no the clips you sent are perfect it's the holes in the door that are enlarged so will fit some heat shrink over them
