simple question, is the engine management light supposed to come on with all the other tell tails when you first turn the key, mine doesnt, i have tried 4 different bulbs and no change.

I just checked this on mine for you. Mine is a UK spec, pre-facelift, but with the later cluster (i.e. post-Sept '98).

On normal start up, neither the check engine (engine symbol) nor the EML lights come on. You can see a video of the squence here:



If I put the cluster into self-test mode, both of these lights illuminate. See http://www.zroadster.net/forum/viewtopi ... 18&t=20201

mines a post face lift all lights come on first click on then off when she starts

mine is an m44 98 z3, dont know if this makes any difference, mine lights up the same as the video. These was no bulb in there when i removed the cluster (i had a fault stored, cleared and fixed then i thought hey wheres my engine light as it didnt come on) someone removed it rather than change the cam shaft sensor (prob the same guy who stuffed paper down the airbag light hole after he removed that bulb too).
