Replacement Spare Wheel

Post by TWO »

I'm considering replacing the spare wheel on my Z3 2.2 2002 which has severe rust :( ...........re-painted but still looks poor :(

Please can someone advise if the spare wheel for the E46 115/90/16" is the same as the Z3 spare wheel E36 115/90/16"

Cheers

Yes they are the same size. The tyre is the same size and the wheel bolts are the same 5 bolts 120mm spacing. That size tyre is no longer available so have a look at the E46 tyre before you get it as all will be older than the 5 year recommended tyre life.
A similar size tyre is available which is 125 85 16 which is 5.5mm bigger diameter so will still fit in the carrier or 125 80 16 which is 7mm smaller in diameter.

Brian,
Do you know if the difference in diameter is great enough to throw up an ABS fault? Maybe not as there could be this much wear between standard tyres. If it does am I right in thinking it should clear after a few miles with the full size tyre (new/repaired) back on.

The difference in speedo reading is less than 1% and the difference between the standard 16" wheel and the original spacesaver is 3%

I had the same old rust problem on the original underslung spare so recently bought a good condition secondhand E46 space saver (they sit inside the E46 boot so don't rust) but the tyre was worn so it was silly cheap. As already stated they no longer make the original tyre size so l ordered a brand new Continental CST 17 T125/85 R16 99M BSW from eBay for £40 and once its fitted l will keep the spare in the boot from now on.

Mmmm I bought one of these tyres..

Despite my last post I have decided that in the event of going away for a short holiday I really would need to put the space-saver back under the car so had a practice at doing that today and guess what.. the spacesaver wheel with above tyre now doesn't seem to fit in the carrier plastic tray..

Am I missing something here? :head:

What do you do with the original wheel if space saver is used ? I do still have the white bag BMW provide but it will not fit in car with a passenger ?

Clearly the wheel won't fit in boot so l carry a couple of bungees which l would use to hold bootlid down, attach from windscreen edge of bootlid over the top and down to bottom lip of bumper, not sure where l got my bungees from now but they are the perfect length.. and l carry a tin of that foam you squirt into a punctured tyre so using the spare is only necessary if all else fails..

I also see 15" space savers available for the Z3 - are they interchangeable? Mine is a 1.9 so I don't imagine it has anything other than standard brakes fitted.
