Copied and pasted BMW "Z3 UK PARTS RESOURCE" into Facebook and it didn't come up with anything.
Am I doing it wrong?

Re: New Z3 FB group
I couldn't find it initially by searching with that text. So I put in BMW Z3, clicked on the Groups tab and scrolled down till I found it.John1950 wrote: Copied and pasted BMW "Z3 UK PARTS RESOURCE" into Facebook and it didn't come up with anything.

Then I joined the group and now it seems to turn up when I search for the original text.
Here's a link which should work unless the code is a 1-time URL (don't think it is).

Facebook isn't really my thing if there is an alternative. That said I own 2 pages (Havant Scalextric Swapmeet & Swindon Scalextric Swapmeet) as it's the only thing some people want to use. I guess it's the mindless personal posts about "hey look I'm in the Kings Arms" and "check what I had for lunch" which really get on my wot-not.

I'm in agreement with your remarks about Facebook - I have a page and hardly ever use it.
By the way, your link works.

Every Facebook page, every Tweet, every new website nibbles away at the readership of a forum like this.
Would your page/idea not sit better under the .net banner?

Re: New Z3 FB group
The use of FB is a good idea if FB was used as a platform to direct interested people to the Z3 forums to source parts and help... We already have a healthy parts exchange forum, and a resident "spares shop" mentality right in the heart of the largest Z owning community... doesn't make much sense to move your "shop" to the other opposite side of town to the market you want to attract simply because 1.2 billion people are discussing what they had for tea etc etc...
I frequently get emails from Z3 owners in Europe and N. America and in every instance I give these people the web addresses of this and the .org sites. My reasoning is simple, "it's more satisfying doing your shopping or research in an environment where you can chat and get helpful advice with other like minded people whilst doing your business". The "community concept" vs the hyper-store concept has always been more enjoyable to me, and if by referring "newbies" to the core Z forums it enhances everyones options, then "F...Brilliant for us all....

Initially, and in an ideal world (well mine anyway) I agree with you southernboy.
But the reality is some people only want to use or know about Facebook. So if nothing else just think of it as a great big fishing net to try and direct people towards this forum.

Re: New Z3 FB group
That is precisely what I was saying about an FB page. On the other hand, anyone with any serious attitude to their car would make the effort to join a forum, and simply googling anything to do with the Z3 will pop up past references on one of the forums which they would have read through.... hence the number of "visitors" one sees logged on here.
Re: New Z3 FB group
Being an old f*rt (well 47 but in on the internet from the early days) if I could I would ban social media! Don't even get me started on Twitter...
I collect Scalextric slot cars and organise 2 swapmeets every year. I know from that there are people who simply wouldn't find there way into the hobby and consequently the swapmeets without Facebook. I don't get my head round it but it's the way it is.

Re: New Z3 FB group
Interesting points of view guys.. its early days yet and easy to pull the plug on it if it doesn't catch on. I have contacted some breakers yards which break Z3s so they will be able to put parts on as new donor cars come in to be broken.. membership is increasing so will wait and see.. The 'community' will always buy things via the forums but there is a massive amount of stuff that is put on ebay that could be sold via the FB group without the need to pay FB charges.. There are similar FB groups (aka Facebay) where local people buy and sell secondhand and they work well, and l suppose another advantage is that you can take a photo of an item with your phone, upload it immediately, and all the FB group members get a notification all within about 5 seconds. I think people would be tempted to use the FB group first and then if it doesn't sell quickly they would then try eBay. By posting an item on the FB group you are in effect instantly showing all the members what you are selling and saying look.. lve got one of these for sale.. do you or anyone you know need one.. If so let's talk..

Re: New Z3 FB group
I'm no fan of selling on ebay - I used to be so this isn't old f*rt syndrome again. They take too much commission and all the rules are stacked in the buyer's favour. So I just buy from ebay instead these days
So looking at it another way happy to see stuff on Facebook rather than Ebay.

Re: New Z3 FB group
I totally agree with the bit about groups on the large, commercial scale social websites such as Facebook eroding the user base of the existing websites.
From a personal perspective I don't use websites such as Facebook or Google on grounds of my own principles (I don't agree with their data use policies amongst other things) and I'm very much a supporter of individual websites as opposed to placing everything into commercialised "walled gardens". I for one would hate to see information and user base being syphoned off from websites such as .net and .org to something we would all have ultimately less control over.

I belong to a few Pages/Groups on Facebook. primarily for information, the Sales/Wants pages do tend to irritate after a while with everyone thinking their spare part is worth a few quid, it's a spare part for a reason, usually because it has been replaced.
Facebook does have its advantages due to it being international, zroadster.net does get a lot of attention on our own page and also via 'BMW Z3 Roadster Owners Group'

Re: New Z3 FB group
I've always found forums far more use than FB pages for my purposes. I'm sure there are many people who prefer it the other way round so each to their own I suppose. I only have an FB account because I play Candy Crush....the account isn't even in my name and I know none of the 600 'friends' I have
