Hood protector and proofer
Hood protector and proofer
At present my 3.0i has a black hood in perfect condition, and I would like to keep it that way. Can anyone recommend a suitable product for cleaning and proofing.
Many thanks

Re: Hood protector and proofer
I clean mine with milton fluid and a brush then spray with tent waterproofer from halfords to make the rain bead away

Just to add another option - Autoglym to a cleaner/proofer kit

You'll get various schools of thought and if someone's been using that method for years with good results then I wouldn't challenge it.
However the advice I received from a soft top specialist was a straight-forward steam clean (with an industrial unit). He did my roof and made it look like new within a few minutes. He said no proofing needed as long as it was an original/lined roof.
He did advise if not done in the right way it can damage the stitching though (sweep along the stitching not across it).

2001 Z3 2.2 Topaz Blue (Trudy) - Keeper rebuilt from a write-off
2002 Z3 2.2 Titan Silver (Cookies) - Keeper rebuilt having been bought with a seized engine
2002 Z3 3.0 Sapphire Black (Peanut) - Keeper awaiting rebuilding having been bought as an abandoned project
Plus Willy, Kodak & Maycee - All 2.2 Sport projects. Yes, 6 is a lot of Z3s
Always happy to try and help with spares
Re: Hood protector and proofer
The purpose of waterproofing the roof is not to because the roof will leak without it, but rather to stop water soaking into the outer roof fabric and making it heavy and wet. It can take quite a while to dry out, and if water collects on the roof rather than running off, it can soak through - particularly where it joins the body of the car.
For variety of product recommendations, I actually use BMW cabrio roof cleaner and BMW impregnating agent, now in an aerosol rather than the original water-based emulsion form. It might not be quite as effective as tent waterproofer, but it is designed for use on BMW's own roofs.
Cheers R.

Re: Hood protector and proofer
I second that with the Renovo kit. The autoglym kit is rubbish and a waste of money by comparison.
I purchased a full Renovo kit off eBay for about £60 ish. This came with cleaning detergent, black restainer, waterproofing sealer, 2 paint kettles, 2 paint brushes and a big scrubbing brush.
There is a very good video on YouTube showing the whole procedure. It took me a couple of days.
My car is Titan Silver and my advice would be to mask off the rear window and ALL bodywork with newspaper as the black stain flicks everywhere and took months to finally remove.
The same company also sold a rear window reviver which was amazing and something called gummipflege (I think) to re lubricate all the seals around the roof.
All in all excellent results the roof looked completely brand new afterwards.
If you need help finding these items and the seller let me know he is over in Cumbria somewhere.
Hope this helps.

Re: Hood protector and proofer
Another Renovo.
Just done my Z4 Roadster in Mallorca which has been exposed to everything for about 12 years and never had a proper roofie job done.
I did it just last month. Results were impressive.
However, the car is titanium and when I 'painted' the roof tiny little black spots flicked onto the body work. They took longer to remove safely than the roof did to paint, but I had painted it before noticing
If I did this job again I would prep the bodywork to avoid this unnecessary work. It was already a whole day job, this just made it tedious.
End result fabulous.

Hi Flight
The retailer on eBay I have used for the renovo kits is called Mondialcare.
Links to the items I have used as follows
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Renovo-BLACK- ... xym2BSGepP
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Nextzett-Gumm ... SwlfxXGn3A
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/RENOVO-Plasti ... s3W1gXZm2w
He also sells an amazing ultra concentrated screen wash, just a 250ml bottle makes 25ltrs mixed! It's really good stuff clears the screen very well.

He has some interesting items for sale in his eBay store.
Hope this helps.

Re: Hood protector and proofer
My roof used to soak in the rain so that the whole car felt sort of heavy and damp inside. Taking advice from here and elsewhere I used Milton fluid diluted and a scrubbing brush to get the algae off, then I washed it with Johnsons Baby Bath then I waterproofed it with a tent waterproofer and the roof came up lovely and as you can see no water soaks in now

Re: Hood protector and proofer
I've scrubbed, Renovoed, Autoglymed, Miltoned, jet washed my roof and still miss bits of the green stuff. Can't see it when it's wet, that's the trouble :>(
