What's it worth? 3.0 Z3 Sport. 21k miles, 2 owners, 51 pla

Post by evobaz » Thu 26 May, 2016 18:05

As above.

My dad has a 3.0 Z3 Sport that he's had for years. The car has had 1 previous owner and has covered less than 21000 miles from new.

The car is a fair weather weekend toy and spends most of its life stored under a cover in a dehumidified garage.

The car has heated leather seats and electric roof.

The car is for sale so what kind of figure should we be asking for this?

(there's a 2.8 car with low mileage up for £12k in a dealer down south but I know it's not worth that much)

I'm guessing the right buyer would pay 8 or 9k for the low mileage........

Sounds highly desirable. And £8-9k sounds about right too. Perhaps nudging the £10k mark even?

£8,000? Bargain!
Probably the best Z3 on sale in the UK.

Low mileage, best engine (apart from the M 3.2 of course) low owners, good colour with nice interior colour, M Sport package.....It's worth £10-12,000 especially as it's the M Sport version. Maybe even more on a main dealer forecourt.

So a dealer offer of £8,000 is about right/fair l suppose. I am willing to bet they biff it out at £13,995 and somebody will pay it "put it on the order for the Z6"
"Honey, l've bought us a little classic convertible...."

Which dealer is it? I'll be interested to keep an eye on their stock list!

A stealer paying 8k and punting it out at almost 14k is a fair price, 6k profit for nothing??

evobaz doesn't actually say he sold it for £8k, he said he had an offer. He asked for advice and the concensus was £8-10k so I'm not sure he would have accepted the first offer, especially at the low end of that range.

He also doesn't say who he sold it to. He just said a BMW buyer enquired.

But if it did go to a BMW dealer (and they will certainly be happy to sell low mileage Z3s) then just keep an eye out on the BMW website. That's if the dealer doesn't already have a buyer lined up. There are 3 Z3s currently up although not this one. Based on those prices this one could be punted out at £15k.

Bear in mind though that when a BMW dealer prepares a car it's on another level to others. I know that from when my brother bought a 1 Series 2 years ago. They repainted 50% of an already nice car, refurbed the alloys, replaced worn interior trim etc and that was a 5 year old car. They'll fix any material issue, service if required and offer a warranty. I dislike BMW dealers as much as the next man but that experienced opened my eyes. That was Dick Lovett in Hungerford, perhaps they're not all the same.

My advice would be to put that Z3 on Autotrader or Pistonheads at £10,995 or maybe even £11,995 and l bet it will sell.

I know it's a lot for a non-M Z3, but everything is right about the car. The real killer is the mileage, 21,000 is very low but not so low as to cause "not enough use" issues.

Also the car has been used on nice days only, so l bet the bodywork and underside are perfect. 3.0 litre M Sport Z3's (and the regular 3.0) are creeping up in value on the back of the Z3M, and this is as good as they get.

All,

The car has been sold to Sytner BMW (based in Leicester I believe). My father accepted an offer of £8500 which we thought was a fair price. The car needs a couple of small rust patches on the bottom of the front wings sorted and would benefit from a service.

The car is currently still sat in my dad's garage awaiting the cheque clearing. Believe it or not, the "buyer" that they sent to view the car thought that he could leave my dad a cheque and drive off in the car....... His words were "but we are a reputable company". Does he think that scammers who present dodgy cheques or bankers drafts turn up in a black and white stripy outfit, wearing a mask and carrying a swag bag telling the seller that they're planning on stealing the car......

It will undoubtedly go back out for an amount well in excess of the amount paid. Based on other BMW approved Z3s currently for sale I would suggest up to £15k.

Bear in mind the comments I made about the amount of prep etc plus warranty. That said you would still expect them to take a very nice margin.

All the same, if the seller is happy with his £8.5k then that's all that matters.

I believe this marks a significant step in the recognition of 3.0s as being not a million miles behind an M in terms of their worth (which I get).

That was the figure that I had thought they'd try and retail it at. (due to the fact that they have a 2.8 with higher mileage for £12500)

To be honest, I think my dad is happy with £8500 as when he told me he was selling he thought it'd be worth about £6k and would probably have accepted that (if offered) prior to me doing some research.

It's very unusual for a dealer to pay in this way.

Did you know chqs can be re called by the bank for up to 6 months if a fraud has occurred?

If I were you I would call Sytner direct just to make double sure it's them who have visited you.

I sold a smart car years ago, took a chq, gave it a week to clear, it showed in my account.

The letter from my bank came 10 days later saying it had been returned.

Luckily it was a mistake by their bank and I didn't lose out.

I don't know any dealers nowadays that pay by chq unless it's another dealer that they know.

Good point. I would phone synters using the public online number and get things confirmed with their owner. Payment should have been made by bank transfer not a cancellable, recallable cheque. Who in Synters have you dealt with and independently confirmed.

They haven't sold it yet.
You can't expect to charge BMW dealer prices as a private individual.
The dealer can offer finance - the method by which most buyers buy.
The dealer can offer some form of warranty and has more buyer/seller legal obligations than a private seller.

You don't have to worry about a chq from Sytners.

As well as previous experiences, this comment was based on my recent experience at both separate BMW and Audi main dealers. Wouldn't trust the word of the sales staff as far as I could throw them :D

I'm really surprised BMW would be bothered with such an old car to be honest as anything over 5/6 years would be disposed off through Auction.

As mine has 22K on it will have to chat to my dealer :P

Age is not relevant if it's under about 60k miles and is a spanker.

It's miles and condition that kill cars.

This is especially true of BMWs that stand the test of time so well.

So I'm not surprised and have seen various in recent years at big dealers. There were 3 up last week before this one.

Wow £15,000 for a Z3 3.0

Shows that the values have turned on these. I guess £8500 is fair as they'll probably spend £1-2,000 getting it prepped and then there's the overheads etc. But still a nice earner.

I'm in the wrong trade.

Knowing Sytner they'll prep it very thoroughly, with mechanicals and the paintwork I'm sure they'll spend £2000

Then there's the £1083 Vat to pay if it sells for £15,000

Then with advertising costs, valeting, collection costs, they will make around £3000

It does show the values are rising, and quite rightly too, the Z3 is a great looking car.

In reality, they will give it a routine service (routine servicing conducted by apprentices in main dealers) and fix any obvious problem or warning light. Another youngster will give it a power wash & vacuum and if you are really lucky a machine polish covered by their "special and mysterious" paint protection system which costs new buyers £400.

12 months MOT included of course but MOTs for dealers don't usually include the list of advisories that pop up on MOTs done for customers like brake pads getting low etc. :D

Wow

Del, you really have got it in for main dealers haven't you.

Many are, as you say above, especially the comment about apprentices working on the cars. The master techs are usually busy doing the difficult stuff the trainees can't do.

I've worked for a few main dealers along the way and I can assure you some do the job properly.

So unless you have direct unsatisfactory service from Sytners that you want to share with us I would not jump to conclusions that they won't prep this car properly.

Sytners would have BMW to answer to if they let a used car go out in a substandard condition.

I once bought a Nissan Pulsar from a Nissan dealer that they'd taken in Px, found out they'd missed some stuff. They initially didn't want to know until I called Nissan UK.

Problems sorted, apologies given.

AsI said before, we've all had poor service I'm sure, but your post is accusing them before they even prepped the car. I think you're being very unfair.

I don't know Sytners at all but I would be genuinely surprised if that's all they did. When my brother bought his 1 Series Dick Lovett did £3k of work and it was a nice car to start with. Partial respray for a few stone chips and scratches, full wheel refurb, new brakes and pads all round because they had just clipped the approved used minimum of 5mm I think it was and all minor interior faults corrected. I know it was £3k as he showed me the invoice. The sales department pay full price internally to other departments. So it's real money off their margin targets as a department = lower commission. That was for a car that retailed at £15k.

It's quite possible other dealers do not do the same. But it's certainly not the case they all do the minimum. They have to put a warranty on it so they would only be cutting off their nose to spite their face if a small problem becomes a major one they/BMW later have to pay for.

I told my brother he was a prat for handing over money to a main dealer when we first started looking. But it was the cheapest car of its particular model in the country and it really was as good as new when it was sold.

They are likely to spend anywhere between £2k and £4K I would think. Which gives them the sort of margin I would want if I was dealing cars. If they spend say £3.5k that's a 20% margin which is no big deal really.

Interesting that the BMW main dealer has started selling Z3's.

As said, normally they would be far too old for a main dealer to consider. The 2.8 they have advertised recently was a 1997 that's 19 years old!

But they are well made cars, all the parts are available unlike some manufacturers such as Fiat. The sale price (of any Z3) will have to take into account the chance of a higher amount of warranty work as well.

Sytner in Leicester have quite a few Z3's going through. When bought our 5 series there were 4 in including 2 M coupes for £29.5k all low miles. They were interested in ours when we were in. The amount of work they do on their sale cars is extensive
and the workshop is busy with 40 odd bays but you pay your money and take your choice.

When I was researching the value of my dad's one they had 2 Z3's. One 1.9 and one 2.8, both of which now appear to be sold.

I'm guessing the fact that they've only had my dad's car a couple of days and it's now prepared and photographed and on their site means that it really didn't need much apart from the points I've already mentioned.

It looks like they've driven it from Fife to Leicester too as the mileage has risen by a few hundred miles.

No regrets about selling it for 8.5k?

Seems cheap now that's it up for 15.

They haven't prepped it yet.

You can still see the corrosion on the bottom of the wing in the photo of the wheel.

Can't believe they're not a little more switched on than that, having a photo showing that.

But still, FIFTEEN THOUSAND for a Z3. And that 2.8 was thirteen l think. They're overtaking the Z4 on values!

The Z4 never did it for me, Z3 has character and classic looks. The Z4 is technically better in every way on paper but that doesn't always mean a better car.
