Hi there is an auction this week end of classic cars, H & H Sister company, google it, one of which is a Z3 3.0i with 15000 miles estimate is £7000 tom £9000 the auction is live through the saleroom i think so you see the price as it sells, it looks in very good condition, I think it will sell for more than the estimate,

Agreed, to me, the Z4 is not a good looking car. :shake: But that is only my opinion!

The Z4 never did it for me, Z3 has character and classic looks. The Z4 is technically better in every way on paper but that doesn't always mean a better car.
Spot on.

It could be a generational thing. I'm 67 and the styling of the Z4 does nothing for me :shrug , whereas the Z3, to my eyes is a thing of beauty. My son is 39 and he loves the Z4, and thinks the Z3 is old fashioned.

What did that Z3 3.0 sell for at the auction mentioned above? I can't find it online.

Nationwide the going price for a mint, under-average-mileage 2.8/3.0s seems to be around £8,000. The £15,000 being asked above stands out in isolation. For £15,000 you start to move in 911 territory.

Agreed.

For £15,000 I'd be looking at a Z4m coupe.

My last toy was a Porsche Cayman S 2006 done 55k and I sold that for £14,000

Does make a Z3 non M car look expensive @ 15k

The thing is you sold the Porsche. How much would a dealer have charged by the time they'd spent money preparing it, servicing it, fixing any faults, putting a warranty on it etc? They are also entitled to take a profit and pay their overheads including salary/commission for the salesman.

The car is still unsold at £15k. I would imagine the dealer will be perfectly happy to let it sit there for a while at that price as an advert to the longevity of BMWs and their resale value after 15 years. Then, who knows what they may knock it down to to sell it.

Also not sure what the relevance of being able to buy a Z4 or Porsche for that money is if what you want is a pristine 3.0 Z3! And the 3.0 Z3 has less than half the mileage at 21k v 55k.

Apart from the kudos I don't see a 3.0 as being a million miles off an M and no one bats an eyelid at £12-£15k for one of them. And a 3.0 is pretty much as rare as an M with the same sort of numbers of both being made. And I'd hazard a guess more 3.0s have been scrapped meaning there are probably fewer left.

Cooper BMW Cobham Surrey have just valued my 2001 Z3 2.2 with 11,500m from new at £12,000. I valued it at £10,000, insurance company wouldn't go with that but gave me an agreed value of £8,995.

Just reading above, not sure if liking a z4 or not is a generation thing.personally(just turned 60), I like the look of both in different ways.
However to me the z3 is a much better car to drive and that as well as the low ground clearance was the reason I recently sold my 3.0 z4 and picked up a 3.0 z3.
I have to admit that the z4 had more options and a better roof but the ride and steering feel were much worse to the point where I thought twice about using it above my other cars.
Now with the z3 I am back looking for an excuse to go for a drive!
Mine needs a fair bit of tidying so not worth anything like the above prices plus 106k on the clock but she is priceless to me.

I have a 3.0, it's a high miler but I love it. Would I pay 15k for one with that mileage? No I wouldn't. It's a great car don't get me wrong, but for that money I'd be looking for an M with more miles. I've driven both and the M is in a different league, saying that the 3.0 and the M aren't far apart is like saying a youth hostel isn't far away fro the Hilton. Apart from the extra 100bhp, the styling and handling, it's a million miles away from the 3.0

That's why dealer prices for M's are approaching £30k and sytner Leics have an M coupe for £38k and 45k miles

I've driven a Z3 M and while l agree that it's clearly a big step up (from the 3.0) it's not "a million miles, like comparing a youth hostal to the Hilton"

Maybe your 3.0 was a bad one, or not the Sport version (which handles a fair bit better, l've owned both) l'd take the M in a heartbeat of course but the 3.0 Sport is a good second best.

Thanks lightning. Was going to reply to say the same thing. Wasn't trying to suggest a 3.0 is directly comparable to an M. But it is a good second best in terms of performance, rarity and desirability for some us - me included and a 'normal' one won't break the bank in the same way as an M.

A nice low mileage 3.0 I'd expect to be £9-10k as a private sale. £15k is understandable, if painful for most of us from a BMW dealer if they've prepared it to a high standard as I've indicated previously.

The Z3 M l drove a few years ago was an 11,000 mile minter that was on sale at £11,995. I didn't have really enough money and bought a mint 2.8 instead for £6,000.

Wish l'd bought the M now looking at current values.

Sytner have increased the car by £2k.

It's now up to £17k on their website. (they've probably had it on he ramp and discovered the underside is like new and sorted the wee spots of rust )

Recently bought my 3.0 for about 15% of that price and although mileage is 100k and needs a little tidying,as a daily driver used just for the fun of driving such a wonderful car, I know which I prefer!
At that price presumably it would be garaged most of the time as I would be scared to take it on the road but each to their own I suppose and if someone likes it enough good luck to them.
At least it keeps the resale value of ours up although now I have been converted to a 3.0 from a 2.8, don't think I would ever sell.

I would love a 3.0, but they only come with the ass-lift body which I'm not at all keen on, so I'll stay with my nice 2.8 which also has the interior I much prefer......... Could always get an ///M I suppose.

Loving the discussion here. I've come from the M3/911 world and have currently gone to the dark side RS4.

However I do have a 3.0 sports roadster. It's a lovely car and even though it's getting onto 13 years old it's still a strong car with and with open top motoring it's a dream.

I think I may have one of the last registered Z3's. Registered May 2003.

Wow that would be (03 reg) one of the last - I don't think I've ever seen one that "new" - must have had a slight overlap with the Z4s. :)

I think generally prices of the 3.0 sport model are on the up due to the knock on effect of the M version price rising.

Case in point the E30 M3 prices over the last ten years have risen beyond belief, subsequently the price of the E30 325i sport has risen as the next best thing.

I think it might just be us lot on here talking up the prices of the 3.0. I've got my 66,000 mile example up for £5k and not a sniff so far, though the dull weather isn't helping. It's the same on the RS forums I go on as well, since they like to talk the prices up as well (I think it's a one make forum thing to be honest). It'a different matter when you actually start trying to sell...I did notice that Syntner have increased the price on this particular one, but it hasn't sold and we may never know what it does finally go for.

It looks a cracking car. Remember it's not a Sport though. Perhaps that makes a difference?

The thing is that it's the sports models or very low mileage versions that are doing well. Colour combos are very important too. We maybe talking prices up but the proof is that Dealers such as Synters are advertising at those levels. I think it's the knock on effect of the prices of the M model. Weather also has an impact.

Yours is a nice example and it looks well looked after, sit tight and advertise it in the right places and when the weather improves I'm sure the right buyer will come along.

To be fair you posted it 2 days ago... And in the middle of summer when people generally have their cars already. It's a stunning example and I'm sure you will get the price easily from someone who knows how great that engine is, I just think it might be the wrong time to advertise. Good luck with the sale

To be fair you posted it 2 days ago... And in the middle of summer when people generally have their cars already. It's a stunning example and I'm sure you will get the price easily from someone who knows how great that engine is, I just think it might be the wrong time to advertise. Good luck with the sale
True, 2 days on here, but it was on the Autotrader last month with no interest at the same price (and I tried slightly higher too first). I waited until the 'summer' thinking this would be the right time to advertise, I was a little slow off the mark as I've been away with work so didn't want to advertise it when I wouldn't be around for buyers. I can't put it back on AT until August now due to work trips and holidays, but figured it won't hurt to put it on here since it doesn't cost me anything.

We wanted to sell it this summer so we can look for a metal top Z4 to trade my OH's car in against during the winter (hoping we'd get a better deal on a convertible then). Since all the mileage gets done in my company car we decided to combine our two personal cars, but it must have a metal roof as the OH parks at the station sometimes otherwise we'd have kept the Z3. If it doesn't sell this summer, then it'll be a shame as it'll probably get little use over the winter if I wait for next spring.

I suspect nearer £4k will be the likely outcome, but no doubt there will be cries of 'it's too cheap'. Whatever happens I'll post up what it does go for which will give members some 'real world' figures for their information.

If it was a Sport I'd be interested at £5k and bighting your hand off at £4K.

Sport or not it's a nice car. There does seem to be a very large number of Z3s including a lot of desireable ones for sale at the moment. We're also half way through the summer and I think optimum sales price is Mar-May. So it's probably more of a buyers market at the moment and perhaps better suited to sub £2k cars for impulsive buys when the sun is out.

If you're in any sort of rush to sell it I guess you drop the price until there's someone who can't say no. If you want the bigger money it could be a slow plod remembering that the number of people who properly appreciate a nice Z3 like yours is somewhat limited around enthusiast forums like this. The rest of the buying public, in the main, probably look at the price tag first not the car and see cheaper (obviously not as nice) ones.

I obviously didn't due my 'due diligence' about planing when to have it ready to advertise then. :( I'll see how it goes with another AT advert in August, but if I have to SORN it until next spring so be it as I don't need rid of it so urgently to be down with the impulse buy end of the market. In the meantime it's replacement Z4 2.5/3.0 will continue to drop in value due to being newer and the OH's Mini value will change little due to its age over the next six months ('56 reg).

Trouble is I've been paying £500 tax and insurance a year to do 500 miles, so it's just not worth keeping it, though the insurance will run until next March anyway, so that's already paid for.

Funny thing is I actively avoided the Sport models when I was looking as I'm not keen on the sport interior/colour combinations that came up when I was looking. I'm not sure how much difference Sport spec makes to the price, I guess it's more if someone is particularly after that spec?

I bought my 3.0 because l liked the colour (Topaz Blue with cream leather/black trim)

I didn't realise it was a "Sport" version until some weeks after l bought it. I hadn't realised there were two versions! Guess l was just lucky.

I had a 2.8 previously, with a few cars in between (1932 Standard Little Nine, Porsche 928 S4, Ferrari Mondial t, Lotus Elise S2) The Z3 3.0 Sport doesn't shame itself in that company.

I'm still not sure what the difference is between the sport and standard and would it make that much difference to price?
Think mine is the standard 3.0 although has sports seats.
Are you sure you want to change to a Z4 as speaking from personal experience, I only kept my 3.0 Z4 for a few months before going back figuratively speaking to a Z3.
Depends on what you want from a car as the 4 will certainly have more extras if you go for a high spec like I did but from a driving point of view the 3 wins easily.
My only advice would be if you have not already done so, would be to have some long test drives.
Good luck with the sale(if you still go ahead)!

The Sport seats are well worth having.
The Sport version also has various extras such as the M Sport steering wheel and gear knob, plus brushed alloy centre console, a different front grille etc....which don't really make any difference.
It's worth having the "lowered uprated M Tech" suspension which the Sport version comes with. There was a discussion recently as some say all 3.0 cars had it as standard.
Even the BMW brochure is not clear, but it seems like it was not fitted to standard cars.

I'm not sure the 'sports seats are worth having' though...I avoided Sports models because I just don't like the look of them/the interior, especially some of the two tone colour combinations. This isn't said to annoy Sport owners, but just my honest opinion as I prefer the plain black seats/interior in my standard 3.0i. Not keen on the brushed metal dash bit either, so it really is just a question of taste. I do like the Sport wheels, though you'd have to be quite dedicated to keep them looking nice; the standard 5 spokes are really easy to keep looking good. My point being that some may prefer one over the other for purely aesthetic reasons...just that I seem to be in the minority. :D

I happen to have the M sport wheel and gear knob on mine which I do like, but I'm pretty sure mine doesn't have the M sport lowered suspension, so I don't think it is installed on all models, despite the vagaries of the BMW brochure.

Remember reading somewhere that you could tell whether or not it was the sport by the distance between the wheel arch and the bottom of the wheel rim.
Just been out with a tape and on my 3.0 it is 600mm which I believe means that it is the non sport?
However having taken out the sump on my previous Z4 which was the sport version,I am glad for the extra few mm ground clearance as more use to me personally than any potential handling benefits of the lowered suspension

I think the Sport extras are worth having. The wheels are probably the nicest part of the package. And I find the seat pad on a non-Sport seat just doesn't look like what you'd expect on a performance car. The standard seats are fine on a 1.8/1.9 but anything with a bigger engine feels like it should have something that looks like it's going to keep you in the seat round the bends properly :)

The difference between non-Sport and Sport models does vary a little with engine size. The 3.0 non-Sport for instance has the lower suspension and LSD as standard. But the thing is if you are going to spend proper money on a really nice 3.0 wouldn't you want to get a little nearer to feeling like you were on your way to an M by having the best package?

Even more confused now!!
My 3.0 has a lsd, steering wheel with an "M" on it, heated sports seats(beige with topaz blue body),style 32 staggered 7.5 and 8.5 wheels and wood dash with chrome trim.
As far as I know this was all from new so assuming it has the higher ride height than the sport, this would seem to be about the only difference.
Of course if all the 3.0's do come with the sports suspension then what do I have?
Possibly a normal 3.0 but with a few optional extras?

Yes possibly. Best thing you can do is check the as-built specification on http://www.bmwvin.com/

That will tell you if it left the factory with those bits. And if it's a Sport it should also have this entry.

719 SPORTS EDITION

You can also put your Reg in here and it should say Sport in the title if it is one. I think this just comes off the DVLA database so it's probably also what your V5 says.
https://www.bmw-warranty.co.uk/BMW/Login/Index

Note. Some people dispute either or both of these methods are fool-proof and that it won't always say it's a Sport when it is. I don't know for sure if it's that or if they think they have a Sport but it's a non-Sport with a load of Sport extras.

No mention of sport on either of those checks which tends to tie in with my ride height measurements as I think from memory the sport was only 585 as opposed to my 600mm
As I mentioned before, I prefer the non sport anyway so perhaps I have the best option ( for me) of most of the sport extras without as much chance of taking out the sump!!!
However to be fair, the standard z3 is probably a couple of inches higher ride height than the sport z4 so the sport z3 should still be a decent ride height.

True; that's all I was trying to say above, though this forum's general preference for the Sport version doesn't give me much optimism selling my non-Sport. Buyers elsewhere will be more interested in a cheap price too...am I between a Sport and a hard place? :D

Selling on a forum many people know the ins and outs and will look for the best spec possible. So it might be people on here are more biased towards Sports but I don't think by any stretch of the imagination it would be everyone. And don't forget there are tons of people round here with pre-facelift 1.8/1.9s which are not Sports. My interest started off with my brothers pre-facelift 1.9 and now I have my own 2.2. At the time I bought it I didn't know the difference and only found out after it's a Sport. I love both cars.

Your's is a lovely car but in all honesty I'm such a tight git I'd want a Sport for the same money. In fact that's my budget for a nice 3.0 Sport next year! But I really am such a tight git I will crawl round on my hands and knees till I find the right car at the right price. So that's a reflection on my deep pockets and short arms and not you :)

The only other thing I'd say is that you've air brushed your registration out. Generally I wouldn't follow-up a car where that had been done. I like to look at the MOT history and the original build spec using the registration. So if you don't want to show your registration you might consider adding both of those items?

Just a couple of thoughts there. I've not been around Z3s long enough to be expert but I do spend a silly amount of time looking at cars for sale to educate myself (and day dream) so I do get to see a lot of what's out there and the pricing.

Have you tried BMW VIN to see what it says? Two tone leather would tend to suggest a Sport model unless they have been retro fitted.
