Help please.

Post by Justbrowsing »

Me and my lad have just bought a 3.0 each.

We notice today 2 differences even though his build is Sept 2000 and mine is Dec 2000.

First different is the canister on his on the front left of engine, mine doesn't have it.

Second is the left side near the screen. I have a braided brake line on the brake servo. His doesn't.

We thought they were the same engine.

I've tried to upload pics but can't from my phone.

Any ideas please?

Congrats on the purchases.

Cannister sounds like secondary air pump, which was a stupid addition for California emissions laws - it pumps air into the exhaust to dilute the gases when the engine is cold. It was not fitted to every car and is common to be removed from European cars, where it is not needed to pass an MOT.

AFAIK braided hoses were not fitted by BMW, so that is likely an aftermarket modification.

Cheers R.

I have 2 Feb 2001 2.2s, manufactured within 3 days of each other. One has the braided hose and the other doesn't. I would tend to agree the braided hose is unlikely to be original.

Plus Willy, Kodak & Maycee - All 2.2 Sport projects. Yes, 6 is a lot of Z3s :)
Always happy to try and help with spares :)

Good info about the canister. Thanks.

Regarding the braid, I've now seen it on a few engine photos, so it's a very common upgrade or factory. Either way, it seems the only difference.

Manufacturers change detail specifications on their cars all the time.
I would not worry about these minor differences between the two cars.

At least you both bought the 3.0 which is a lovely engine and makes the Z3 into a genuine high performance vehicle.

The braided hose to the brake servo is factory albeit I see nor rhyme or reason why some do have it and some don't maybe different suppliers?
