The briefly available, 6-cylinder 2.0 L engine produced 10 more horsepower than the 1.9 L engine, and made 16-inch wheels standard.

You could argue that the last few S54 engined cars were a facelift compared to the earlier S50 engined cars

No. There was a real 1800cc engine which was not available in the UK.g8jka wrote:Wasn't the 1.8 facelift and not pre-facelift?
The UK facelift model badged as a 1.8i is actually a 1900cc 8-valve engine.

I was thinking the same after I made the comment, there are slight differences to the S50 model but to my mind the 'Facelift' refers to the rear end change.BeemerBoyo wrote:You could argue that the last few S54 engined cars were a facelift compared to the earlier S50 engined cars

Something a bit funny here. Common acceptance is they didn't start facelift production until April 1999!colb wrote:Mine is badged 1.8, its a facelift model built in December 1998 and registered in the UK early 1999. M43 Engine 8valve.

Re: engines fitted to z3's
The BMW "Model Year" changes in September; so the facelift models commenced production on 01/09/98 ready for the April '99 launch. My facelift 2.8 was built in the 3rd week of August '99 and is therefore one of the last ones built as from 01/09/99 productions was switched to the 2.2 and 3.0 and the 2.0 and 2.8 were dropped.mrscalex wrote:Something a bit funny here. Re: engines fitted to z3's
I don't think that can be quite right as my brother's 1.9 was built Dec 1998 and is definitely a pre-facelift.Zed Carer wrote:The BMW "Model Year" changes in September; so the facelift models commenced production on 01/09/98 ready for the April '99 launch. This is the history from the belgacom Z3 pages:
01/01/1997: Z3 1.9 rear-drive Roadster (140 bhp) launched
01/08/1997 : Z3 2.8 (193 bhp) launched
01/07/1999 : Z3 1.8 and 2.0 launched [mrscalex - built from April 1999?]. Restyled rear end, chrome-rim headlamps, chrome-rim instruments.
01/09/2000 : Z3 2.2 (170 bhp) and 3.0 (231 bhp) launched.
01/02/2001 : Z3 2.2 Sport and 3.0 Sport launched. 2.2 Sapphire and Titanium editions (both £25950 new)
There are definitely 1.9 and 2.8 engined facelifts out there. The whole 1.8 thing I find very confusing although there is some logic to calling an 1895cc engine a 1.8 to put some space between it and a 2.0 for marketing purposes. Some 1895cc facelifts have 1.8 and others have 1.9 on the boot lid. But it's possible they all started out as 1.8s and some were rebadged as 1.9s by the owners?

Re: engines fitted to z3's
Whilst we generally accept that a build date of after 04/99 means facelift, if you try to configure a car in realoem/bmwfans with some of the different engine types, you will actually find that some "facelift" cars (blue) were built before then:mrscalex wrote:I don't think that can be quite right as my brother's 1.9 was built Dec 1998 and is definitely a pre-facelift.
M43 1.8 EU LHD - 01/95 to 09/98 (no RHD for this engine)
M44 1.9 EU RHD - 07/95 to 04/99 (08/95 to 11/95 are not listed, but 12/95 is)
M44 1.9 EU LHD - 04/95 to 04/99
M43 1.9 EU RHD - 09/98 to 06/02 (10/98 and 11/98 are not listed, but 12/98 is)
M43 1.9 EU LHD - 01/98 to 06/02
M52 2.0 EU RHD - 09/98 to 10/02
M52 2.0 EU LHD - 07/98 to 10/02
M54 2.2 EU RHD - 01/00 to 06/02
M54 2.2 EU LHD - 12/99 to 06/02
M52 2.8 EU RHD - 01/97 to 05/00
M52 2.8 EU LHD - 07/96 to 05/00
M54 3.0 EU RHD - 09/99 to 06/02
M54 3.0 EU LHD - 09/99 to 06/02
S50 3.2 EU RHD - 05/97 to 06/00
S50 3.2 EU LHD - 04/96 to 06/00
S54 3.2 EU RHD - 04/00 to 04/02
S54 3.2 EU LHD - 03/00 to 05/02
And in fact there is some overlap between models being phased-out and their replacements when both types would have been on the production line at the same time. Also note how the dates are frequently different for LHD and RHD models. I've excluded US and SA cars from this, but there will be a similar story there I'm sure.
Cheers R.

My Z3 is a 1999 2.0 litre straight six which is what BMW should have done from the start.
They did no favours to the launch model with the 4 cylinder unit as a starter, you can't beat the sound of a BMW 6 no matter what size the engine is!

Re: engines fitted to z3's
I disagree. The 1.9 only has a small amount less power than the 2.0 (138bhp compared to 147bhp) but has a lot less weight, and that weight is carried further back in the chassis due to the shorter engine. Whilst it doesn't sound quite the same, the handling is much better.rambo wrote: They did no favours to the launch model with the 4 cylinder unit as a starter, you can't beat the sound of a BMW 6 no matter what size the engine is!

Re: engines fitted to z3's
Why was the first US Z3m just a bored-out and tweaked M52 2.8 and not the proper S50. Am I correct in thinking the US got the later S54 version?
