Halfords Aftermarket Radio

Post by Lancsbob »

Hi
Am going to get Halfords to fit an aftermarket radio in my 2002 Z3 2.2 & their
site says it just needs a converter harness at back of radio but i have removed
the amp & multi changer from the boot to give extra space leaving unconnected wires,
will they need to do any extra work to get new radio up & running?

Cheers Bob

The connector for the original BMW headunit is a BMW-specific connector. You will need a BMW-to-ISO adapter cable. The headunit should have a cable that takes it from ISO to whatever is on the back of the headunit.

If you have removed the amp, then how are the speakers connected at the moment? There may be some more wiring to do here.

Cheers R.

I have just removed the amp & cd changer & left it IE no radio working.

Iv'e just now after a couple of years decided to give myself a Christmas present
& have an after market radio/cd fitted & don't want to do it myself but am
sure its not just connect/fit & go.
Halfords has told me it needs a harness adaptor but am sure it wont be just that,
i'm sure it will need some work at the boot end. I think someone has said that it just
needs to be linked out at the boot wiring. I just want to be able to tell the Halfords
fitter what needs to be done. I just don't want to do it myself.
Oh, and the original head unit is still in place.

Thanks for reply.

Everything is wired to the BMW adaptor so when they fit the ISO adaptor to the BMW adaptor all should be fine.

I removed my cd changer and amp but didn't change any wiring.

You will need an adapter, but it depends on what system you had as to which adapter is needed. Does the speaker grill in the middle behind the seats say Harmon Kardon on it? If so you had two amps and may need a different adapter. if there is no Harmon Kardon badge then you had the Hi-Fi system which just added a subwoofer, powered by the amp you removed.

So i went to Halfords & they wouldn't touch it,said it was too complicated
& required extra work to the wiring which they wont touch.
Am waiting for a quote from a profesional hifi fitter but
he's saying all the speakers will need re-wiring so i think his
quote will be very large.

Peter did you do anything to the wires in the boot as i'm
told the speakers wont work as they were connected through
the old amp in the boot.

A blessing in disguise if Halfords won't touch it.

They cocked up the same job on my brother's Z3 and the new head unit never worked properly - loss of bass. In fact I still need to sort that out by putting an original head unit back in.
