Sticking lock - my mistake.

Post by dazthephot »

I’ve done something stupid. I thought it would be a good idea to squirt bike chain oil into the drivers lock mechanism to make the lock/unlock action smoother.
Er wrong!
It’s now so sticky in there that the lock pivot struggles to move and stops the central locking actuator pushing the pivot over to lock the door.

Can I squirt or soak the lock in something to irradiate all trace of chain oil?

Try giving it a good dose of WD40 to wash the oil out, to lubricate locks just use graphite as its a dry lubricant and won't cause sticking.

Thanks. I squirted a fair bit in before but I need to take the lock out again and soak it completely then get some graphite grease in there.

Maybe I could use parafin or white spirit to clear it out.

Don't use graphite grease, it will stick again, what you want is graphite powder, put some on both sides of the key and work it in by putting the key in and working the lock back and forth.

Thanks.
Just to clarify I mean the actual main door lock mechanism not the key lock. I had it out to sort the actuator issue and thought whilst it’s out .....

All locks best use graphite powder for the lock barrel, a little light grease on any rods and moving parts within the door should be ok but I would use a dab of coppereaze grease on thinks like moving rods and the larger solid metal parts of the door latches that actually move, the copper in the grease acts as a lubricant.
