Anyone else after insurance at the moment?

Post by X958 »

I know this has been covered before, just wondered if anyone else is currently looking & has found any good deals?

I'm 34, in South Manchester, 3.0 Z3, parked on driveway, 6 years NCB, 2 non-fault claims in last 2 years (both idiots reversing into me in car parks!). I currently have NCB protection with eSure, they're quoting ?999, and so far they're the cheapest with NCB protection (?859 without)

Sainsburys are offering me ?745 but without NCB protection.

I've tried DirectLine, Admiral, Privilege, Tesco, Elephant, QuotaCar, AutoDirect & AutoTrader, none are competitive.

I am due today - just had a quote for W2000 2.8 Z for 350 pounds. I am 32, with 10k limit and car kept in garage. Try Adrian Flux Insurance for performance cars - they sourced it thru Royal and Sun Alliance who give 30% discount for just owner driver insurance.

Thanks for the suggestions guys.

BMW insurance quoted £1343 with NCD protection, £1146 without :(

However, Adrian Flux quoted £919 with NCD protection, £683 without, which is the cheapest so far (although with a £350 excess).

Any more suggestions? Renewal not for another couple of weeks.....

I've found elephant.co.uk or Norwich Union to be cheapest at around £600 for an ///M though I must check out BMW insurance next year.

I've been with Admiral for several years, but this year they were not competitive.

Eventually I ended up with 1st Alternative, a spin-off from esure I think.
£200 cheaper than Admiral, cheaper than all the supermarkets, and BMW.

Esure actually refused to quote me and they don't have to say why.
The bare-faced cheek of it!

My big saving (I think) is the fact that I told them I'd be doing less than 6000 miles per year.

Let us know how you get on.

Thanks Alfie.

Interestingly, even though I'm an eSure customer & they've sent me their renewal reminder, when I went to their website to get a quote as a "new customer" they refused to quote me too! I got diverted to the 1st Alternative website, I can't remember if they quoted me or not, but I haven't made a note of any prices so if they did, they must have been more expensive.

Looks like it'll be Adrian Flux for me, unless something better comes along...

I was also wondering how many of you have NCB protection? For those of you who have it, do you think it's worth it? (it's going to cost me an extra ?236).

I reckon eSure are aiming their targets at 'Percy Passat' and 'Reginald Rover', and trying to get away from us with our 'high risk boy racer' type motors. Hence the diversion to 1st Alternative where their sister company is happy to take our business.

Insurance is damned expensive in your part of the world, isn't it?
My NCB protection only came to approx 30 quid extra I think.
So yes, I have NCB protection!

Have you tried Tesco?
I'm 35 with 10 years NCD protected and I'm covered for 15,000 miles a year. (Including Business use)
The car (Alpina Roadster S- 2004) is garaged in a CV postcode, and it's costing me just under £700.00 per year fully comp. (Excess is £300.00)

Sorry ... I'm a Muppet .. Read your Post again and you have tried Tesco already.
It does make you wonder though what each Insurance Companies criteria for costing is.

I think my postcode is my problem .... I'm in a very nice part of South Manchester (Didsbury), unfortunately South Manchester has a bad reputation for car crime, we all get tarred with the same brush.

I'm with Direct Line - cheapest originally and at renewal since owning my 3 litre. I do get an extra 10% though as my buildings insurance is with them. I usually try all the online quotes, including using confused.com and BMW insurance, and they are all dearer, some more than twice the price!

Around £600 with protected NCB and £400 excess.

And I must add they were truly excellent when I was shunted from behind in December. Work authorised within the week through the BMW dealer, and really easy to deal with - call centre was located in Central Birmingham rather than in India! So a friendly local accent  And everytime I phoned, the call was answered instantly - no waiting - no queuing.

Unlike Norwich Union Direct who sadly now insist on using call centres located in India - which is fine unless you have a problem then you spend half an hour in a call queuing system, only to talk to someone whose first language is not English and they have no record of any of your previous calls - as my partner found out last year :head:

Top Tip for anyone looking for car insurance is the Autotrader website.

Just renewed mine last Saturday £337 (£250 excess, 6000 miles, driveway, NG10 postcode) legal protection and NCP incl - from Sainsbury.

The site checks over 100 insurers and lists around 30 to choose from.

I always shop round when i get the renewal but nobody could beat Elephant, i'm 43 with 6years NCD protected, £250 excess, £270 on 99 2 litre garaged. I think the on-line companies are been more competitive at renewal time to keep your business.

Just renewed with Footman James (Classic and Sports Car brokers) for 99 2.8 Roadster original quote was £534.45. Went to Frizzells and they quoted £425.00 but said other than non standard alloys would not quote for any other mods. Went back to Footman James couldn't quote cheaper insurance but offered a discretionary "loyalty bonus" which brought it down to £443.10. (and I presume they are still making money so what does that tell us!) However, they indicated that when I fit strong strut products that it is likely that there would be no additional premium and that sold it for me. Insurance includes self and wife with full business use and 11 years protected NCD and £220 excess. At the end of the day its not just about price its about what you get for your money. Have been with Footman James for a few years (started with my MX5) and have found the service excellent although fingers crossed no claims made yet!

Esure and First Alternative are actually the same company with Esure aimed at regular motors and First Alternative aimed at the sporty stuff. Since First Alternative came along after Esure it doesn't surprise me that an existing customer can get a quote for something a new customer has to go to First Alternative for.

I started with my 2.0Z3 with Esure and upgradecto the ///M mid term, so all I paid was an upgrade. I expect the renewal will be OK with Esure.

I found a great thing with Elephant though. Go around other companiues first and then go to Elephant and when it asks what previous quotes you have, enter £20 less than your lowest quote and see what happens

There are some wicked variations in quotes out there. Royal Sun Alliance via AA brokers worked out at £373 with fully comp, in garage, NCD protection, 15k miles, two drivers including commuting to work. 2.0 litre Z3 'w' reg, no mods.

Elephant were by far the most competitive for me, but I also have access to another car, and that I think made a big difference.

I hope they sort you out but when i tried to get Charlotte insured through both the companies they wouldn't touch it. The quote they eventually gave was over £1500pa with a £350 excess!!!!!  (North Yorkshire, 35yrs old with 10 yrs ncb)

I eventually got it through Carole Nash for £750pa with ALL the mods declared. :-):-)
