problem with blower heating button

Post by jeffz3 »

hello ;)

a friend of mine have a probleme with button of blower heating.
the fan don't work on 1, 2, 3 position but it's ok on 4 position.

it seems to me that it s a probleme with this black potentiometer :

Is this part must be changed or can it be repaired easily?

ps : i had search a post on this problem, but haven't found... :?

Thank you ;)

I've had this problem on several other cars (and household objects too). It's a simple switched resistor that controls the fan speed.

On the cars that I've had with this problem it's one unit with the switch. Replace the whole thing. Should be a relatively cheap fix - and probably DIY.

John.

I just had the same problem....

(Nothing to do with the potentiometer in the console pictured above :head:)

A detailed procedure for the Z3 resistor pack fix is provided in the August 2006 newsletter of the Alabama BMW club at www.albmwcca.org. http://www.albmwcca.org/newsletters/2006_08.pdf
It took me 45 minutes and is quite straightforward. I would like to make a few clarifications:
1. Use a couple of solid knives to remove the 8 clips delicately (each comes out in two halves- first the top layer and then the bottom)
2. You need to remove the wipers but NOT the wiper assembly to access the blower box.
3. The resistor pack is upside down on the bottom of the blower. The pack slides out with a nose plier towards you, 45 degrees up.
4. The mode of failure is usually fatigue of the copper rivet which loosens marginally over time (the loose one of the 4 which serves as the common contact for all 3 resistor coils). In this case you don't need a new part. Delicately hammer the cap of the rivet while supporting underneath.
(I also soldered to make sure I don't visit there again :nerd:)

Does anyone have a copy of this procedure. That website doesn't seem to have it now.

I need to get in to change the resistor on a facelift 2.2, and I don't know how to get behind the dash.

I assume the resistor is the same as on the 1.9?

The resistor is in two different places depending if you have aircon or not. Non aircon cars you can find the resistor located in the passanger footwell behind the centre console trim, If you have air on fitted the resistor is fitted in the fan unit under the windscreen wiper trim - accessed from outside the car.

I''ll try and dig out some pictures.

Brian, Thanks.

The car does have aircon.

Are the resistors the same part, and particularly the same as a 1.9, as Spurs Fan has one to sell ;)

My 1997 1.9 does not have air con if that makes any difference.

You can see below that the Resistor part for Air-con and Non Air-con are different

Blower Heater Resistor Non Air-con - 64111375754 - Part 3

Blower Heater Resister Air-con - 64116912633 - Part 4

To get to the resistor on the cars with Air-con you will need to do the following: -

1. Raise the bonnet
2. Remove the 2 plastic caps on the wiper blade nuts.
3. Remove the wiper blade nuts and wiper blade arms.
4. Release all 8 cover fixings just under the windscreen.
5. Remove the sealing strip along the far side of the cover strip.
6. Lift off the cover strip.
7. Undo the two retaining straps around the fan shroud.
8. Remove the top fan shroud cover.
9. The resistor pulls upward from the centre of the fan in an arc, the wires and connector for the resistor are captive as part of the fan unit.
10. Install new unit and put back together.

Put the new resistor pack in at the weekend. Your instructions were perfect.

I now have all the fan speeds :D
