Just bought a Z3 WOW :) A few Questions please....

Post by hopper2k »

Hi All,

I am now the very proud owner of a 1999 T-Reg Z3 in Silver and all i can say is WOW :D What a car... i had a MGF before and the build quality and driving of the Z3 is AWSOME... Cant wait for the summer to get the roof down ;)

Ill try and post some pictures asap but i have a few Qs please...

When i press lock on the key fob it locks all the car but not the drivers door so i have to lock this manualy with the key, is it ment to be like that?

Also there is a little rattle somtimes, and a funny noise, i think it sounds like the exhaust...

Also the key fob is quite worn and i think this needs fixing sooner rather than later, is there anywhere i can get this done or do i need to take it to a BMW mail dealer ?

Apart from above i am really really really over the moon with the car, its amazing... :)

Thanks for your help in advance everyone...

Cheers,

Neil.

No there must be a fault on the central locking.Everything should lock when you press the big button. You mention the unit is worn. Have you tried using the spare or changing the transponder fob batteries. You should have 2 transponder keys and 2 oridnary keys (one being a wallet sized emergency plastic key and the other a valet key).
Also there is a little rattle somtimes, and a funny noise, i think it sounds like the exhaust...

try looking for a loose or bent heatshield somewhere. Hopefully that could be the cause. I understand that sometimes a rattle can indicate a dying cat converter but I would imagine the car wouldn't run well if that was the case and the emissions would be out when car MOT'd. has the car got a new MOT?

Also the key fob is quite worn and i think this needs fixing sooner rather than later, is there anywhere i can get this done or do i need to take it to a BMW mail dealer ?

When you say the fob is quite worn - in what respect - the keyshaft or the transponder casing?

Hi Neil and welcome, I would return the car to the dealer and let him sort the problems, you should have at least one months warranty with him.

A rattle in the exhaust could mean the cat is gone :?

On my Zed the passenger door lock sticks occasionally - a quick squirt of WD40 down past the button has worked in the past, but during the winter it has given up altogether! Think it'll be a door panel off job in the spring.
Have fun... :D

Hi All,

Thanks for your replys, much appreciated... :)

I only have 1 key and it seems to work fine, apart from the drivers door which does not lock... So i guess it definatly sounds like a fault on the central locking :( The buttons ie casing on the key just looks really worn.. works fine though...

Yes the car had a full service, MOT & rear window before i drove it away from the garadge... they did not notify me about the fault on the central locking though, how do you think i stand on this? I guess im not to botherd but id rather keep everything working spot on for resale value etc etc...

Thanks again...

Neil.

As you've only just bought it from a garage it must be worth a moan as all should be working - did it come with any warranty?

Definitely worth buying a spare key. My local BMW dealer wanted about 63 forms of ID in order to get them and plenty of cash.

Went to my local specialist who got me a replacement standard key and a 3G EWS Keyfob and programmed it all for £70 and he didn't want any ID

One of my pet hates that... a car that doesn't come with all the keys (in saying that, I've only got 2 keys for my car.)

Its as bad as someone selling the car but keeping the towing eye and locking nut!

Mine too! How can a big chunky key (usually with a fob) go missing??? :?

Especially as a new key costs about £100 I think.

yep mine only came with 1 key which is really annoying. They are £100 plus vat or so from the dealer and no indy I could find can get one. I got the car privately and the guy said he had only ever had one key. But he bought it when it was 2 years old - so the first owner apparently lost all the other keys in the first year?? very irritating. Reminds me I must get a new key - it's the kind of thing you put off after the January credit card bill though isn't it?!

Hi Hopper and welcome,

On your central locking, try lockin the car with the key from the passenger side, or the boot, if the drivers side still doesnt lock then its definitely the door lock solenoid. They are a pain to fix, although some on here have done it themselves. I got both mine replaced last year, cost me £150 from my specialist, but would have been double that at BMW.

I also had a rattle like the one you describe. If you only ear the rattle over bumps and if it sounds like its coming from the rear wheels, try pulling your handbrake slightly whilst in motion and going over a bump that would normally make the rattle. If the rattle is not heard with the handbrake pulled slightly, then it might be a tiny clip inside your drum that may have come loose. I had this problem.

Hope it helps.

Hi and welcome!

Only just joined myself a week ago, although had my car about 6 months now..

I didn't buy mine off a bmw garage, and there were quite a few things wrong with it, but I fell in love with it just by looking at it!!

I had an AA inspction carried out on it, and they made me a list of everything that needed doing etc. I just said to the bloke at the garage I will buy the car once all the list has been completed, and he did.

The garage gave me a 6 month warrenty, which he said even if something goes wrong a yr down the line call him, and he will sort something out for me..

I think it depends on the garage, and the buyer, but like most people have said, its def worth a call and a moan to them! If you don't ask, you don't get..
