Exhausts

Post by Bloke »

By the noises coming out of my car, I think I might need a new exhaust, I just spoke to my indi and he says I shouldget the mechanics to Punch the cat? Now im sure that this doesnt constitute cruelty to animals, How does one do that?

Im having my Tracking checked tomorrow to see if I have worn Bushes so it will be up on a ramp so I should be able to see whats wrong.

Any tips to help me tell whats wrong? :dunce:

Any help appreciated

what age is your car??

punching the cat refers to knocking the backbox with your knuckles to check for a rattle. indicating that you'd need a new cat. you should be able to tell if you need a new exhaust. you'll hear a strange rattling from it when driving. almost as though it was dragging along the ground behind you. you'll probably be going through more oil than usual aswell

good luck

Bloke,
There is a company called Exhausts unlimited in the London E3 area, give them a try, trade prices over the counter.

It's probably cheaper to go to Hayward and Scott and have one hand made in stainless steel.

BMW prices are ridiculous, I dread to think what an ///M exhaust costs.

Exhausts

Post by 100GRA »

I might be due for a replacement exhaust for my 1999 2.8 before the coming summer is out and, rather than wait until the old one has blown and I have to get a new one fitted in a hurry, I want to suss out a suitable stainless steel replacement. If it also has a sportier tone than the standard issue, I wouldn't complain.

I've been on to the Milltek Sports Exhausts website, but they only list a replacement kit for the Z4, not the Z3.

Anbody got any ideas or advice?

I saw a few nice 'super sprint' systems last year in stainless.

Eisenmann do a Z3 system, but it's pricey. A few agents in the uk now.

I had my Eisenmann fitted for something like £600 including VAT and fitting. (and that was for the system where they had to cut an extra hole in my rear spoiler)

Realistically its going to be cheaper to fit some sort of after market ( performance ) exhaust, as my Indin cant get a deal on a BMW original through his contacts....

So the search starts now, I cant live with the blowing exhaust that long, want to get something sorted this weekend,

So what should I get

Criteria:
1 my car is a daily drive, so I cant really get enything too noisy!!
2 Dont really want to increase my insurance too much with a costly upgrade.

So what do I do? suggestions greatly appreciated re brand and model of exhaust

thanks

Just make sure you avoid the Cobra exhaust, unless you are also intending on adding blue neon lights, "Turbo" stickers and a numberplate saying LRG 1 !! Unfortunately I have one on my 1.9, but not for much longer.

Can't really comment on the insurance part (has always seemed ridiculous to me the way it's done in the UK).

The Eisenmann doesn't sound loud until you really ref the car, can't imagine you doing that constantly on you daily drives

Don't know if there is anyone near you with an Eisenmann, but the ones on this forum can only agree with me. You can hardly hear when idle-ling, only when the refs go up.

Where did you get your system from Jay?

Do you have to change the entire exhaust or can you just change the rear box?

It was made to specification, droped the car off and 3-4 hours later drove it away ;)

There maybe a similar outlet nearer to you if you didn't want to travel that far.

Not to put a dampner on this thread, but my car had this rattle a while ago, which turned into a loud clonking noise at the weekend , and a few hours ago turned in to an allmighty metallic grinding noise culminating in a loud bang

An hour ago my car was towed away and I am waiting for a loan car at the moment....

Will have to wait untill tomorrow to find out exactly what was going on
I have to say, Im dreading it ££££££££££

Noises Off

Eisenmann exhausts are available in three noise levels - Factory Sport, Road Sport, and Race.

If you do long runs, forget about lots of noise, unless you want to end up deaf!

I'm on the verge of buying a 'Factory Sport' system for my 2.8, and see that the UK distributor has arrangements with various good people to fit the systems. Have a look at their website.

diff

Post by philabbo »

Hi Bloke
Just had my rear diff replaced under warranty as the dealer said it was making too much noise when I took it in for an inpsection II service. They said the bill was over £900 for parts and fitting so my warranty paid for itself this year. Must admit my car feels like new....nice and quiet again.

Just when I had some spare cash

Post by phil485 »

Typical, the sun was out, cruising top down around the M25 going home after work. Just past J19 when it sounded like I had a Harley sitting in the front of my car.
Not had a chance to look under the car, couldn't be arsed to get jack and stands out, but I reckon its the exhaust. R reg and 87000 miles so I suppose it's done well. I was about to get the wheels refurbed and the stone chips touched up but it looks like that cash is going else where now.

Any ideas if one of the exhaust centres will do a cheapo exhaust system and if so how much. Failing that, can anyone recommend anyone near windsor, can'tdeal with the embarrasment of driving it too far at the moment. Took away all the style marks getting home last night!!
