I spent a happy day in the freezing cold and snow and managed to get one of the last difficult jobs done today. I dropped the rear subframe and removed the diff and fitted an offset bush at the rear. This rotates the diff a bit to get it in alignment with the engine which is sitting 2.2 degrees down. Its important to get the diff in alignment with the engine centreline (within 0.5 degree) otherwise the driveline will vibrate. Its all back together and the driveshaft is fitted too. This fits perfect and has around 10mm end float.
The bush is made by powerflex and my son Tim made me an offset centre for it to get the right angle - thanks (he is watching this)!

I also have the clutch line connected up and a remote bleed line fitted.

The next job is to change the camshaft, and valve springs. This seems quite involved so will be a weekend job. The problem now is it so cold in the garage

Yup love those rims, cant wait to see them fitted!! if they look really good I might sell the LM's and go for something similar. Did you consider HRE's as well? they have caught my eye on a few bm's across the pond

I was hoping to having it driving this week but the clutch is leaking fluid out of the bellhousing so the engine is coming out again now!
Anyways all the hard work is done, nearly there. Problem though is the engine is not holding idle properly and I hear I need a full tune doing on the ECU. Its a bit annoying after paying good money to GM for the LS376/480 controller. Guys on LS1Tech say its not uncommon for the stock computer to do that. I will probably have it on the dyno soon. I need to find somewhere good with the LS engine.

Thanks for the help Marc...may well use the place in Doncaster since its close to me.
I think I have the idle problem sorted - it looks like a wiring issue to the cam sensor is causing it. I wont be able to check this out until the engine goes back in but I'm feeling optimistic.
I'm going to finish off the wiring next and a few other small jobs while I get the spacer made.
I have stripped it down now and the slave has over-extended and caused the seal to leak. There must be some incompatibility between the clutch/trans/slave. I need to get a spacer made to move the slave closer to the clutch. With that all should be fine.snatch wrote:Chances are the banjo has bottomed out in the clutch slave cylinder .... they are not quite so deep ..... but it feels like its gone tight... it happened to mine.. sounds good .
Paul @ Wortec does the GM ecu tunes ( for a living ).

I got the clutch sorted out - it ended up being the clutch adjuster that had activated and I just needed to reset the springs. The engine has been out and back in twice sorting that though do its been a lot of hard work for a small problem. I think the cam sensor is now working after a mod to the wiring. Its idling a lot better now. Sounds rather mean actually

Remaining jobs are getting fewer - mount accelerator pedal, finish wiring off, fit electric cooling fan and put the front end back on. I hope to have it on the road next weekend and will take some more videos then.

Today has been a fun day on the motor. It was off the road in July and today I had a little drive for the first time since then, 6 monhts later. The car doesn't feel at all like it did though
I got the front panel re-fitted and started on the PS hoses too.
DSC02466 by deansie1712, on Flickr
The accelerator pedal is DBW and fits well in the space. I had to mess around with the adjustment and think it feels about right now. The travel seemed a bit short but now its fitted its ok. Nought to 500hp in 2 inches lol.
DSC02468 by deansie1712, on Flickr
Sitting in the car with the engine running the car shakes bit at idle. It not noisy but there is a very deep throbbing burble going on! The clutch seems to work nicely. It very light and smooth. Brakes are working ok which is good news after having the ABS unit off and re-bled. I gave it a very short blip and the rears screeched on the drive
Next weekend I will get a cooling fan fitted so I can run the engine for a bit longer. It seems to warm the coolant up very quickly now! The wiring all works ok. I have a working coolant gauge and rev counter. The latter is proof the cam sensor is working ok so thats good news. I have bought an oil temperature sensor and will be wiring that in too to get the gauge to work. More next weekend chaps.

You need an award for this job mate. Your engineering prowess is impressive.
Can't wait to see & hear it run in anger. If it sounds quiet, get it sorted. V8's aren't for decoration, they're for re-verberation!!!
We'll have to see how it compares to 3.6 litres of flat 6 with twin turbo's & AWD

Excellent work Mark, congrats on the first drive, even if it was just a short drive under the power of the new engine. Having built a kit car from scrath a few years ago I can imagine the pleasure of those first tentative metres!
I've got the plates for camber & toe, they look spot on. If it's ok I could drop them off and have a look over the beast?!? PM me if ok.
Cheers,
Ian

The GM ECU puts out a tacho signal (although its reading 2/3 now until I get it tuned) and a MIL light, plus other stuff I'm not using. For coolant I have fitted a z3 coolant sensor into the o/s head and wired that back to the car. For oil temperature I bought a E30 sensor not knowing whether its characteristics were anything like what was needed. I took a punt on that for a tenna since the z3 oil sensor looks expensive, plus the one I have had a lucar connector which is easy to hook up to. Anyways its a good match and is reading 5 degrees high at 100 so will tune that out with a low resistor in series. I had to buy the X20 and D100 connectors from BMW and 20 terminals since the old ones went with the S50 engine. These all came to about £80 so that was a shock. The D100 is the BMW diagnostic connector and I have wired that up so the airbag and service resets will work.markrnorton wrote:Mark
How did you get the gauges wired in ? are there feeds from your new ECU ?
Mark
Outputs from the GM ECU come via a Delphi GT150 connector. The good guys at GM provide the mating connector with no contactors so I'm going to set my electronics engineers onto the job tomorrow at work

I had the fright of my life tonight - the car deposited a gallon of oil on the garage floor leaking out of a fitting I had assembled wrong. I naturally thought I had wrecked the engine but fortunately there was still oil in it when I stopped the engine so no damage done I managed to sort in within an hour and its running fine again, phew.
Most of the conversion is done now - the engine bay is complete apart from one PS hose I'm still waiting for. I had a couple of snags - the car is still sometimes dying on return to idle. I put a new throttle body on it today after finding out I had the wrong version. This doesnt seem to have changed the idle although the MIL is no longer illuminated. I have heard of several others with idle problems. I have decided to buy HP Tuners and think I will be able to tune out the idle problem with that. There are some helpful posts about with idle map settings.
The other problem is the cooling fan which is not switching on. The fan works ok (Kenlowe 16") but there is no power coming out of the GM relay box. I ran the engine up to 92degrees coolant and still no fan so it cant be right. I hope that will be easy to sort.
A few pics for you below, and the new number plate too

The buffered temp guage on a Z3/Z3M goes from 4F - 2C (with the needle sitting dead in the middle) which is approx 75 - 110 degrees.
Maybe the engine needs to be a little warmer for the fan to kick in?

The operating temp on my Mustang is 180-195 F which is around 82-90 C

I have read the standard trigger level for the fan is 90 degrees. I was measuring thermostat out temperature so I think I need to try again and measure radiator outlet temperature. The sensor is in the head so will be pickig up that. If I run it to 95degrees and it hasnt kicked in then that confirms a problem. First I think I will try to trick the ECU by putting a 100 ohm resistor over the connector pins to the sensor. That equates to over 100deg so its a safer quick test to do to see if the fan comes on. When I switched the engine off the dash gauge was showing slightly over the centre. I'm hoping I bottled it just a couple of degrees shy of the trigger level.

I got the car taxed and insured so today has been time for a proper first drive out. I have done about 6 miles - a rather nervous experience I have to say worrying about what may go wrong. Anyway its so far so good, no leaks or major problems. There is an occasional buzz from the transmission where I think I have a small foul. The sound of the engine is terrific I seem to be getting lots of people head turning as I drive along
My custom power steering system seems to be working ok. I have a couple of hoses in contact so need a different pump inlet fitting. A very minor problem easily fixed.
My son took a little video outside home...

HP Tuners arrived yesterday so Im just getting that going and will be tuning the idle, rev counter setting and dropping the cooling fan trigger temp (which it seems is set to a rather high 100deg), to start with. Im also thinking about buying a wideband sensor so I can do a diy remap. Im not convinced the stock GM tune for this engine is right. With a wideband, and HPT I can drive the car and log the engine parameters and corresponding AF ratio. I will be able to tweak the map to get the ratio right.
Next main job is a brake upgrade. I have been studying options for this and have decided to go with 135i calipers front and rear. These are Bremdo 6 pot and 2-pot calipers. Discs will be 345x28mm up front off the Z4M, and standard Z3M 312mm rears. This setup will give me a bit more rear bias and huge braking performance - I hope.
