BMW is currently in the process of issuing recall notices to current owners of the E46 M3 that were built previous to 06/03.
The issue surrounds parts of the engine that have proved problematic before, and now BMW is replacing parts of the engine to protect the engine from total failure.
The work will be carried out by your local dealer, and is estimated to take around 1 day to complete (from cold).
Your warranty is not affected or extended to cater for this. In some rare cases a full engine replacement maybe required.
Please see the link at the bottom of this notice for information being discussed in the M3 forums.
This recall affects an estimated 30,000 M3's and also includes those that have had previous engine failures and had replacements fitted.
The registered owner of the M3 should receive the notice from BMW, but you are advised to contact your nearest dealer as soon as possible with your chassis number to check if your vehicle is impacted by this recall.
BMW have said that it is quite safe to continue driving your car but you should make contact with your dealer as soon as possible.
Logic suggests this must include all cars with the S54 engine and I would imagine is the dreaded 'Spun Shell' fix.
Just announced: M3 Recall - S54 ZM Implications?
Giles,
Sorry didn't make it clear again.
"albeit for my S50", meaning I knew it's not an S50 issue.
By "advice received here" I mean't received on this site in general.
I was just thinking of Vanos etc when I renewed my warranty.
Thanks for pointing out it's the S54 though.

It's interesting that I cannot get through to the service department at Sewells - seems they're permanently engaged...I wonder why
You're right on cost Robin - I think the invoice for my new engine was £11000, now even though its not necessarily a new engine in every case, 30000 x by even say £1500 per fix is £45million
BMW should write out the following lines 30000 times
"I must do R&D thoroughly"
"I must do R&D thoroughly"
"I must do R&D thoroughly"
etc
etc

Just spoken to Sytners----------
M Roadsters are not on recall but M3s are.
The fault is the bearings being made of a faulty material!!!!!!!!!!
They cant explain why S54 engined M Roadsters are not being recalled.

Sapphire black/Imola red and black interior/ red roof/ S54 - the only RHD one made.

Same story at Sewells Phil. On inputting Charlotte's chassis number, the central database did not show that the recall was required or more accurately that it had actually already been done.Phil wrote:M Roadsters are not on recall but M3s are.
Down side of there only being 79 I guess...
