Heavy clutch on M//

Post by Z3cade »

Are the clutches on the M//s heavyer than a standard z3?
As the clutch on the zmcoupe is very heavy/stiff to push down..
Its had the braided clutch hose fitted and bites in center like my 2.8 but is just stiff to push and makes your leg ache after awhile.. Any ideas? Or is it normal...

Mine is that I have just bought and the others that I have driven recently were the same so suspect it is an inherent characteristic as a dealer would say. :D

Will have to let you get in the drivers seat mark :-D and see what you think... As long as you promise to not get any custard on the seat ;-)

I wouldn't say mine is particularly stiff, I didn't notice any difference from 2.8 to 3.2. It's no stiffer than my Audi A3.

Thats why i thought it should be no stiffer than my 2.8..
What do you think can be done to improve it? is it new clutch? or is there a clutch cylinder that can be at fault and may need replacing?

Nope should not be stiff at all. Mine is quite light actually, lighter than my M3 and the wifes X3.

Ahh that's it! I knew there was something wrong when i pressed the clutch and the brakes came on :D

Seriously though, my M Roadster is a very low milage one and i suppose as close as you could get to new and therefore representative of what a clutch should feel like. It's not heavy whatsoever. Quite pleasant in fact.

I do not think mine's heavy either... But then I jump into another car and nearly stick my foot through the floor pressing the clutch I suddenly realise the clutch must be quite heavy ;)

ML mentioned mine was quite heavy and that it was down to age/mileage. A new one would be lighter.

Hi

Mine is heavy, traffics a nightmare

And the clutch pedal is higher than the brake pedal
The dealer said it was because of the power engine the clutch
needed more thrust? :rtm:
Also you cant rest your foot to the side of the pedal
When I purchased the car the dealer changed the clutch pedal
making it lower, easier to drive

That was a long time ago

They might have remedied this on the later M's "offyourmarks"
I find when i jump into another car, the clutch takes a
bit of getting used to

My M clutch is heavy too and it makes my calf ache when I have to wait in heavy traffic. The clutch on my 2.2 is much lighter in comparison. Both cars are 2002 models and as far as I am aware, have not had the clutches replaced.

They are heavy but shouldn't be stiff.

I can't remember much difference between my S50 and S54. In fact my S54 had a brand new clutch and Flywheel fitted just after I bought it (both OEM) and there was still not much difference. (the failed unit was slipping but was not heavy to use).

The earls hose made it smoother but not lighter or stiffer.

I would not call it stiff at all but its not light either.

Its obviously been done that way to limit the number of female ///M drivers

After driving it more i can explain it better as if theres to much tension/spring.. Alot of force pushing your foot back up.. It really is making my left ancle hurt :-(
Could that be air in the clutch line maybe?
The cars done 108k so no low miler by any means and its the original clutch..

Theres no clutch slip tho and the bite point is half way like my 2.8
