Good brake pad DIY

Post by shantybeater »

Morning all,

I've had a look in the knowledgebase and there seems to be a guide with very little pics and one by aceman for changing the discs (which is far more what I'm after)

Are there any others kicking about? I assume I don't need any special tools?

I had mine changed in a local garage, £30 labour not worth getting dirty :D

A very simple job to change the pads. Changing the shoes is more difficult, but no more difficult than changing shoes on any car.

I would always recommend DIY as garages bodge things and don't tell you about what they've done (such as bypassing the wear-out sensor :head: ).

Wow there's a big sweeping statement

As witnessed on my car with a receipt for new brake pads fitted at a well known chain of tyre/exhaust/brake fitters. Obviously, I can't prove it was them, but the pads were new when I got the car, and so was the receipt.

I guess they would just sweep the problem under the carpet  .

The only odd one on all BMW's is a 7mm hex socket... 90% of all socket sets seem to come with 6mm and 8mm so can be a PITA to find a 7mm in a hurry ;)

I'm sure the guides mention this but worth stressing IME.

My bro had already made one up thank god but there was a panic moment when I noticed a lack of 7mm hex's in two tool kits.

Does anyone happen to know if the back pads are as straightforward? (Due to handbrake?)

The Back brakes are the same as the front, the handbrake is a seperate small drum brake built into the disc. The drum bake linings last forever. I have just changed them on my E30 for the first time at 217000 miles.

I would get lots of penertrating fluid on the disc brake carrier bolts in preperatin during this week as my front left was a real pain in the arse to undo. The thread was slightly stripped so as a temperary repair I cut a small groove in the bolt to act as a tapping bolt and used a bit of heat on the carrier to get the bolt back in. I'm now after a replacement carrier as I hate bodging but stealer prices for this part made me raise my eye brows more than a tad.
