Retro fit cruise control to //M? HELP

Post by Z3cade »

Hi guys, know this has prob been asked before but is it possible to fit cruise control to my M?

I can see all the wiring and space for the unit under the bonnet, is it an easy job? And anyone know rough costs?

Cheers

What's needed for it to work on my M? As I have the bracket under the bonnet.. Etc..

See there a few units on eBay listed for e36 z3s 3series etc?

Seriously, shouldn't be too difficult to do though and you could probably pick up the bits from a breakers out of an old E36 M3.

You'll need the steering column stork and actuator for certain but not sure on the the wiring, there's probably a box under the dash as well.

I fitted cruise to mine a few weeks ago, it was a doddle :D Just followed the write up by Brian H.

Much easier on the later cars with fly-by-wire throttle, just fit the switch/stalk and plug in an interface unit - job done in half an hour 8-)

Well the S50 is a cable throttle, so it is likely to be the same retrofit at to the 2.8 in the first thread Gazza linked to. The S54 is fly-by-wire and is much easier to retrofit cruise to.

Link to RealOEM with parts list;

Also here is an actuator going cheap on fleabay. RealOEM says the same actuator was fitted to the car this fella says it came off (2000 318Ci Coupe) but as he says might need cable changing;

I've been gathering the bits together over the last few months and I'm just about there. Just need some time to install.

1. Cruise control actuator nr 65718369027 - fit from E39, E38 NOT FIT from E36 - Quarry Motors £20
2. Cruise control switch nr 61318360926 - fit from E36, E31 i Z3 - the best with 6 pin terminal - Quarry Motors £20
3. Control unit cruise control nr 65711387625 - fit from E31, E32, E34, E36 i Z3 - silver metal, NOT black plastic (bmwmini – new price £346).
FAB Motors £40 (Same part number as for 840i)
4. Clutch switch nr 61318360421 - OEM it is very expensive, so putting the substitute forward for example EPS nr 7.1110 cheaper ten times – EBay £8
5. Bowden cable for cruise control nr 65712228746 (bmwmini) £19.32 (inc VAT)
6. Bearing accelerator Bowden cable nr 13541747519 (bmwmini) £0.41 (inc VAT)

Based on a list from a guy (Wania) on Z3 MC Forum who did an excellent write up with photos describing the installation on a LHD S50 M Coupe. When I get a chance I'll do a search for the link on the Z3 MC Forum.

Anyone else used an E36 control stalk? What's the right wire connections? As there's five wires where in the coupe forum guide it says to connect the four blue wires?
There's a purple and black wire on the E36 stalk, does this connect to the purple/yellow wire on the zed?

Any help would be appreciated

E36 stalk wires:

Blue/yellow
Blue/green
Blue/grey
Blue/black
Purple&black

The Purple/Yellow wire is the feed. The other four connect to the control unit.

See page 248 on the link...

http://www.porterbility.co.uk/Files/PDF/e36z3_98.pdf

If it is the wrong year, I can redirect you.

I wouldn't get too hung-up on the colour of the wires unless you are trying to do a complete BMW retrofit (which can only be done with ALL the correct parts). I would be more concerned that Terminal 5 on the switch was paired with terminal 20 on the control unit, for example.

You can either use an E36 stalk like this one.. ( this is mine with the white plug removed )

Image

Or buy a new one from bmw for our zeds which will plug straight in

I fitted mine a couple of months ago...these are the parts I needed:-
Column switch (came complete with button) # 61318360926
Actuator (fits in the engine bay to the bracket) # ....8369027 (came with bowden cable off a Z3 M # 8380083)
Bowden cable bearing # 13541747519 (Also came with the actuator)
Control unit (electronics box) # 65711387625 ( You need to remove the glove box to fit this item...I found a slot above the other electronics there to slide it into)
Clutch switch # 61318360421
I didn't have a mounting bracket in the engine bay so bought one from BMW # 41148401744

After I had collected all the parts, it was a simple plug in and go, apart from the bracket which I had to fit into the engine bay. That required drilling sealing and bolting.
I did notice that some of the actuator bowden cables appear longer than others in various pictures. Mine was a short cable and fortunately came with the rubber grommet (Bowden cable bearing). The connectors in all instances were multi-pin, with fewer wires than the conector allowed for. I ignored this, and assumed that it was for alternate cars, or simply that the connectors were common to other applications, and therefor made assembly / cost sense when building these cars. As it turns out I was correct. After all the items were connected, it was fully operational.
All the reciprocal connectors were already in the car wiring loom, so I simply pluged items in....crossed my fingers...and went for it. I figured the worst would be a blown fuse....

the thing is Southernboy iv got 5 pins connected on the loom and only 2 wires on the stalk....i really don't fancy plugging the wires into different positions and taking it out for a spin ....could end up with a right situation :?

That stalk/switch you have is definitely wrong/butchered.

I just had a look back at when I fitted cruise to my S54. The S54 is fly by wire, so if anything would have a later switch it would be that and it doesn't. I used the '926' switch with the 6 wires. I just did some goggling and could not find another switch that looked like yours. There are a few of the part number you need on eBay right now prices ranging form £16 to £60

Hope you get it sorted.

your right siwilson...iv googled it myself and cant find any "e36" ones with the same fitting apart from one ..

2 wires... :?

iv been on to quarry motors twice today and they were supposed to get back to me but haven't as of yet

ok we have everything fitted...but no joy with it....nothing happening to it at all

we have 12 volts to the clutch switch....switch works when off the car (tested with continuity and get current when pressed in) iv got 12 volts going to the stalk...but when i press the clutch in we still have 12 volts...so im assuming that the switch isn't seated right?
took the switch out and it was fully stuck down (so in the on position ) so have released it and it now works as it should OFF the car...put it back on and still nowt...doing my head in :head:
