Rear Springs replacement

Post by tribbster »

Hi guys
Is there a direct replacement for the rear coil springs, without lowering, apart from the BMW part ?

Hi Liam
just really wanted to find out costs to freshen it up, but I don't really want to lower it, purely for the fact I don't think the original wheels are big enough to take a 30mm drop, too many speed bumps around here. and I believe new BMW springs are roughly £150+ vat each, which makes it an expensive freshen. Bushes around the rear will need to be done too, so was trying to make it so it's just one visit to the mechanic, as I don't have the facilities here to do it myself.
Hope life is good for you, and you are getting the chance to get out and have a blatt while the weather is good !?

That price seems a bit high. We had a broken spring on the Z4 earlier this year and the springs for the Sports version are BMW special order only but it was "only" £99 (incl VAT) for one spring. Perhaps the ///M springs carry an additional premium?

Chances are . . . they do, will have a double check with my local BMW dealer. That price was quoted to me from a BMW specialist in Bournemouth called Motech, he has great knowledge, and is thorough, but the cost is never cheap. . . . . But I guess you get what you pay for.

Not an M owner and not being a know-it-all, but reading the thread I was a bit surprised that springs (presumably in OK condition?) rather than shocks were being considered in the context of a suspension refresh. Generally, drivers with approx. 60,000 miles or more on the clock notice a big difference when just renewing "tired" but otherwise MOT legal shocks.

Hi Dell, the suspension was replaced last year, but due to Wiltshire Council's inability to fix pot holes, I sustained a break at the top of the spring & therefore needs replacing, I have bought a used spring to replace, but I'm checking other avenues before the car goes up on the ramp, so I get it right first time, obviously replacing both with new is preferable, but BMW parts come at a cost and just need to know what else is out there, and other people experiences.

Mines lowered 30mm Nick and I have no problems with potholes etc.. You can get a set of 30mm springs for around £250

My sig pic shows how high it sits with 30mm drop.

Well mines on 30mm intrax springs, Bilstein B8 shocks and H&R anti roll bars..
Yes she goes round the bends like a flatbed :D

When I had my 2.8 I replaced the shocks with oem replacements and dropped it 30mm, it made a huge difference in handling.. So on your M it should make a nice improvement ;) if you decide to drop it 30mm make sure you go for a decent set of springs.. Ie H&R , Eibach or intrax
