Purchasing a Z3M

Post by BostonGreenZ3 »

Hello

Some older members will remember me from several years ago :)

I am now looking to purchase a Z3M, and I would like to get some opinions please - Do I get a S50 or S54?

I've seen a lovely S50 in Evergreen which I've fallen in love with, but I am unsure due to the issues of driving this model in the wet weather (tail happy)??

Perhaps some of you could guide me in the right direction, your opinions would be greatly appreciated

Thank you in advance

Shirley :D

good decision!!!!

s50's are fine, but must be treated with respect in the wet, that doesn't mean you cant drive them (and make very good progress) in the wet but you must be careful.

traction control on the 54's can help, but that doesn't mean they are idiot proof!!, they can still bite!! plus they are harder to find as so few were made.

there one (s50) for sale on ebay for £8800 that belongs to forum member 'M11 POW' that looks like a very good car for the money.

I've never had problems with traction on my S50, even in soaking wet conditions, but that being said I usually don't drive like a nutcase, and adapt my driving style to conditions (I guess years of driving in Finland has also helped). I've also had proper tyres: got the car with some Avons, now Good Year F1 Asymmetrico 2s. Avoid cheap s**t tyres as they can be very slippery on wet and unpredictable on the limit.
When losing traction on purpose, car's been very predictable and easy to control, although if traction would be lost inadvertently I'm sure the extra second or so to react would make things a bit different! Nevertheless, unless you plan on driving it like you stole it, S50 is fine. And there's always the option of getting an aftermarket traction control (e.g. Racelogic) fitted! :)

How much are you planning on using the car? What's your budget? If you plan on driving a lot, a reasonable mileage S50 in good condition would be my choice as there are many available, they are relatively cheap, and if you ever sell it you'll probably get your money back. If you won't do many miles and have a bit of extra dosh, trying to find a low(ish) mileage S54 and keeping it in great condition would IMHO be a decent investment.

Have you seen Liam's car (Z3cade, advertised here as well)? Having seen it up close, it's a well-sorted, well-modded, very clean example!

That green S50s on my doorstep in Peterborough ;)

If you decide to look at that one then I would invite you to look at mine, even if its to compare cars.

Don't worry about traction control, as long as you have premium tyres and don't hoof it in the wet you'll be fine

Mine hasn't seen rain in nearly 6 years! Doesn't go out in the wet ;)

All the best, Liam

Hello

Many thanks for your replies

Sounds like an S50 would be OK for me then, as I'm a steady driver

Yes, the Evergreen S50 is the one in Peterborough which is not too far from where I live

Have you got the link to your car Liam?

Once again, thank you for your helpful opinions, very much appreciated

10 years and 80k miles in my beloved S50 means I can shout the following:

Z3Ms ARE NOT TAIL HAPPY :!: :!: :!: :!:

Yes, there's enough power to spin the wheels if you feel like it, and yes it has a short wheelbase which means that power drifts are best left to Chris Harris and Tiff, but there is plenty of traction, brilliant turn in, and almost perfect balance, so you'll need to drive quite badly to be embarrassed.

Janijoeli is spot on about the difference good tyres make. I'm a member of the Falken 453 supporters club, and change to winter tyres each year, because snow and ice will defeat you in a Z3M on summer tyres.

I had a couple of hours of one-on-one training in the Z3M at Prodrive in Kenilworth yesterday - fast circuit, handling circuit, and skid pans. The instructor, who drives all sorts of exotica, raved about the handling of the car.

You must also be on Rockingham's doorstep, where they provide excellent skid pan training. I really recommend this for all who want to push the limits of their car - it will really give you confidence in all circumstances.

Almost two decades with the M and I can only repeat what has already been said. It is mainly about the tyres. Yes you must compensate in the wet and I have found one of the main dangers being aquaplaning. But I believe that you have to adjust your driving in the wet irrespective of the electronic aids fitted to your car.
My main car has adaptive drive, dynamic stability control plus and self-levelling pneumatic suspension. However, drive in the wet irresponsibly, even with all those electronic aids, you can still illicit a skid. That car even with all those driver aids is very difficult to drive, on factory fitted tyres, on ice and snow. Fitted with snow tyres I have no problems.
So an S50 is fine if shod with quality tyres. I have always used Goodyear Eagles, as fitted from new, but there are other excellent options which have been discussed on this site in the past.
Buy one and enjoy.

When I said almost two decades my car is Feb 1997 so it is seventeen and a half years young. It is actually an S50 M Roadster sent to Germany a few months before the official German press launch. Since we seem to get a considerable amount of surface water on our roads, beware after heavy rain even with almost new tyres.

That is an interesting and rare car indeed! Must be the earliest Z3M in the UK. 8-)

Have you owned it from new?

I think it is the oldest in the UK and one of the oldest in the world. First owned by a BMW main regional agent in Germany who kept it for just over one and a half years and covered 20,000Km. The car was then sold it to an owner living in Belgium who ran it for a further 20,000Km. I acquired it in early 2000 with the complete history. Since I lived abroad for many years I don't mind left hand drive cars. In fact I prefer manual left hookers. I have done just over 100,000Km and have a complete history of everything done since new. I now feel I am just beginning to know the car!

Just read the listing for the car (thanks Gary!) - looks really good!

You need to replace the rear tyres as a matter of urgency - I'm sure the P7s are fine, so matching rears would be a good solution, although I've not used them myself. High quality front tyres with good tread depth and cheapo rears near the end of their useful life is a recipe for challenging  handling, even in a well balanced car.
